I lost my thirst... Anyone else?

Recommended Posts

I had the gastric sleeve in 2016. One of the side effects I have experience is that I do not get thirsty since having my gastric C. As a result I can go a day without even drinking Water and not even feeling thirsty. Oddly I brought this up to other gastric c ladies on another post a few years ago and no one seems to have the same problem. But it all started after my gastric C surgery and I can't seem to drink water real well. Takes time to put down 8 ounces of water at a time. Strangely, I can drink flavored water or wine for example and it's easy to drink down but water by itself just difficult. On top of that I just don't get thirsty and I've ridden my bike 20 miles, come home and realize late at night I still need to drink water cuz I haven't had any all day. I realize this is terrible but the odd part is I don't feel thirsty so I forget to drink. Through the years I'm starting to notice side effects like my lower back hurting my urine being highly yellow and I know it's real bad for me because I can injure my kidneys. I don't want to do that but I just was wondering if anyone else is having the same problem? I did recently get back a new blood test and I'm waiting for the doctor to call but it does show that I have some kidney issues probably a result of dehydration. I'm really trying hard to get my water in or some liquids but it really is a chore. Quite frankly I haven't lost that much weight from this whole surgery either I feel like what I lost was my thirst. Anyways I was just wondering if I'm alone so far as I haven't heard too many people with the same issue nor do I understand why it happen to me? Nor did my doctor.

Thanks for your feedback.

I used to drink Water all the time pre-surgery, and I don't really like it anymore. I drink A LOT, but not water - it's usually Crystal Light or flavored waters.

I am 5 weeks post op. I got a gastric sleeve and I feel exactly the same as you. I used to drink so much Water all the time and I would choose water over any other type of drink (except maybe coffee) and now I find it so hard to drink water and/or other liquids. I'm almost never thirsty and I'm pretty sure I don't even reach a liter of liquids per day and I am VERY worried. For the first time in my life is my pee yellow and it smells like pee in a public restroom! I feel sad about this and I will ask my doctor in my next appointment because I hate that drinking water is not nice anymore..
On the other hand I can tell you that I'm forcing myself to drink one small glass of water first thing in the morning and then I end the day drinking a 250ml mug of infusion.. then I sip here and there. I have a 500ml bottle of water with me all the time that I try to finish throughout the day (although I'm almost never successful) and then I get 1 to 2 small coffees a day. Still my pee is yellow af. Maybe you can try something like that?

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
