DS Post Op - Did you need help from anyone?

Recommended Posts

Hello - I'm having DS surgery mid to late April. I live alone in an in-law apartment in my son and daughter-in-law's home. Did anyone need any help from anyone in the initial healing process? They just had a baby so I don't want to be a burden to them too much.

So if you did need help - how often and with what? Thanks in advance for your help. This is a great forum!

Other than the first time I got up to go to the bathroom in the hospital, I never needed ANY help. You should be fine--good luck!

You maybe restricted from driving initially. I was cleared after 1 week.

@Rose57I had the traditional DS almost 15 years ago and the answer is yes regarding help. I had my mother stay for about a week. I was too tired and weak to do much. She made my meals (which was a tsp. of scrambled egg for Breakfast 😁), kept track of what pills I started on and crushed some into a tsp. of yogurt as I recall. She also pushed me to get up and walk outside several times a day. I needed her to clean myself as well.

I just had surgery in December and I did not need much help really once I was released from the hospital. I had help available, and having someone there was nice, but most of what I needed was emotional support as I healed. I think you'll be okay, and it will be nice knowing they're there and CAN help more than actually needing their help.

I had my surgery at the end of January and I did need a little help, but not much. I was a little unsteady for the first week or so because I felt really weak and my Mom took time off work and helped me and followed behind me when I walked so that I didn't fall, but other than that I was pretty much okay. My Mom technically didn't actually have to take time off work, but two and a half years ago I had brain surgery and then ended up with meningitis following the surgery and could have died so... she's really over protective even though I'm 32 and an adult she always responds 'No matter how old you, your sister, and brother are, you're still my babies' so yeah... I think you'll be fine though!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
