Severe Pain Before and After Vomiting

Recommended Posts

Does anyone experience SEVERE pain before and after vomiting? I would like to know if this happens to anyone else that is more than 4 weeks post-op. The first time this happened at 10 weeks post-op, I thought I had a leak or a rupture. I had VSG and I do not experience dumping syndrome. I was eating peanuts and then choked. I then starting experiencing EXTREME pain. I didn't know what was happening and I was in so much pain, I went to the ER and then vomit while I was there. I again experienced the horrible pain and vomiting today (11 weeks post-op)

Unfortunately, I have PCS'ed (military move) away from my surgeon and I don't see my new surgeon until Wednesday. I will definitely be telling them about this but I am looking for some insight.

I wouldn't eat any peanuts for one thing. Your system probably can't handle it. I was told that nuts is a no no after RNY. I would go back to post op foods until you find out and stay hydrated.

I honestly don't think that sounds normal? But we all experience pain in different ways? Glad you're seeing your doc on Wed. I still to this day have difficulty handling peanuts and Peanut Butter. Dunno why. I do get terrible esophageal spasm and nausea with that food.

Hm, maybe that was the reason. I did cough really hard before the pain started though. I will steer clear from them for now until I hear what this new surgeon has to say about it.

Thank you for your insight. I will be sure to explain each instance and see what they say :D

depends on how far out you are. I can eat them with no problem. Early out, though, yes - they advise you to avoid nuts. Although I wouldn't be surprised if there may be some people who can never eat them. But as a general rule, no - a know a lot of RNY'ers who can (and do) eat them. Just not soon after surgery.

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
