I have a cold 2 days before surgery! Will they cancel

Recommended Posts

I'm so sad. I have developed a full-on cold; sneezing, very sore throat, losing my voice. I have notified my surgeon via email (Per pre-op instructions to notify if I developed cold like symptoms). I don't have a fever....Anyone have any experience with this? Am I going to get cancelled? :( I'm so sad. Also I have moved so much stuff at work to allow for the time off! And of course endured the pre-op diet....But if it is unsafe of course I understand.

It is hard to say. My guess is the doctor will decide the day of surgery?

Maybe the worst will pass in the next 2 days.

I had cold symptoms when I had my bypass. The doctor said as long as I wasn't running a fever and my lungs were clear he'd do the procedure and it turned out fine! Good luck!

My best guess is that they will have you arrive as normal for surgery and make a determination at that time. I'd be willing to bet that they choose to err on the side of caution and reschedule if you still have things like:

  • Fever
  • Coughing
  • Throat inflammation
  • Lungs not perfectly clear

I was not sick going into surgery, but came down with pneumonia a few weeks later (I'm told this was likely a side effect of the anesthesia). That was no fun! These are big surgeries. Don't fret if the doc delays you a little while to get over this cold. Another week or two is no big deal in the grand scheme of things if it puts you in a better position for success.

I'm sorry about the timing, but better safe than sorry if they have to postpone it.

I'm guessing you're right. I have to just wait this out

I just am coming off a really bad 2 week cold (yes, many last that long) and no joke, I can’t imagine not being able to breathe through my nose and coughing my head off after surgery. I couldn’t work for a week. A few colds are a week only, but it is just hard to predict the course. Hopefully it will/did work out!

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
