Drainage from incision site???

Recommended Posts

Hi, I had a MGB last Tuesday. They pulled the drain on Wed. night. The incision was fine all week until I showered on Sunday and it started draining again. I just changed the bandage and 10 mins later it's soaked again. I was wondering if anyone else has had this happen? It's the same light red liquid discharge that was coming from the drain when it was in. My stomach feels softer and I don't really have pain, so I think the draining is helping, but I just wanted to ask everyone here while I wait to hear back from my Doc.

My guess is the warm Water and movement of taking a shower pushed Fluid out that was trapped. The shower may have also loosened glue and the fluid will take the path of least resistance. I would call the surgeon regardless but unless it continues to drain at a steady rate or changes to a yellow color, has an odor or you run a fever I would bet it is fine.

I spoke with the surgeon and he stated some people drain for up to 2 wks after MGB. Thankfully this is all normal, but strange because it stopped draining after the drain was pulled. Nonetheless, all is well in my world. Thanks for the comment.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
