Aversion to Poultry?

Recommended Posts

My sleeve seemingly has an aversion to poultry. Ive tried to eat chicken and turkey cooked in various ways (baked, roasted, pulled, stir fried, etc) and my sleeve just does not like poultry anymore. I can get by with some Soups that have chicken in it. Otherwise it's painful to digest. So I guess I will have meatloaf or shrimp for Thanksgiving. Anyone else have difficulty digesting poultry?

Same here - Both me and my brother have the same issue with chicken? No clue why and we both ate a ton of chicken prior to surgery. I have googled it and for some reason it is very common with no real answer, I can eat steak but chicken just does not cut it.

One thing i can barely do is Pressure cook Birds till its pulled chicken or turkey, That is a little better but try it -

chicken is tough to digest for a lot of people the first few months post-surgery. You'll most likely eventually be able to tolerate it, though. Some people say it's easier to digest thigh meat with some kind of sauce on it (it's the dryness that seems bother people's stomachs)

chicken was a problem for me also when I had my sleeve. It did get better in the years that followed. I have had chicken thighs and they do go down well.

I think give it time, I couldn’t tolerate chicken, tuna, sardines during the soft phase no matter how slow or how wet i made it but honestly my body was having a tough time with meat And fats prior due to my gallbladder and food allergies. I did tolerate beef better but grass fed organic beef, and vegetarian organic chicken (green wise Publix store brand) I would just buy and eat less or when chicken went bogo. It depends on the quality meat. But for now I’m working on high Protein veggie burgers that have pea protein and vegetables.
never cook things dry, keep meat portions smaller too.

also can I suggest getting a good digestive enzyme like garden of life chewable, something with a range of enzymes that will help you with the hard to digest foods. I buy from Vitamin Shoppe or vitacost. I dislike our local GNC it’s a franchise ... but if you have a good shop you can ask about digestive enzymes.

also as I said, give things time and try them in small doses even with sleeve. (I had bypass) digestive enzymes can help with preventive for developing GERd.

I guess I'm lucky. I've only had small portions to now but I've had no issue with chicken yet. Or red meat. This weekend will be a test though, I'm going to a wedding and having steak. 1 month post-op

The thing with chicken is that is often filled with saltwater and chemicals to make it look and weigh more than it does. So if you are trying ordinary chicken your stomach probably will not respond well because it is not good for you. Try eco-chicken or just let it be.

I have always disliked chicken so not an issue for me, even though it is the only thing my tummy litterly sends back imediatly.

Oh that is good information1

Thank you!

Yes it’s almost always additives and hidden filler ingredients in even foods like chicken that can cause tolerance issues. But also our new sensitive gut needs to be treated like a baby when it comes to trying new things.

Yes! Me too. I can barely get 1 or 2 bites in before I am so uncomfortable. I tend to avoid it for that reason. I eat a lot of shrimp and natural Peanut Butter. Even at 11 months I still prefer soft foods over meat. Chicken is also too dry for me. If I cut it up into the tiniest pieces and put it in a salad I do okay with it. Weird that when I combine it in a salad it works.

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
