Curious About First Fills

Recommended Posts

Hi Everyone - I have not had my first fill yet, as I am only 12 days post op, but I was curious whether the time frame for first fills varies? Ta, Amy.

Hi Amy, typically it is around 6 to 8 weeks depending on your surgeon. Don't be surprised if you don't have good restriction right away. It may take you several fills to have optimal restriction. Good luck.

Hi again - I was speaking with a lady today who had a fill put in at the same time she was banded - she has a 9ml band and

the doctor put in 4mls. I can't wait to get some restriction happening!!

Evert doctor is different. I had my first fill last week and I was banded on the 2nd. When I had the surgery he put in 1CC and at my fill he only put in .6CC. I thought that would not make a difference, but it does. The doctor knows best and every situation is different. Good Luck!

Every doctor follows what they feel is best.

The INAMED/Allergan instructions for fills is on page 12 on this link:

Thankyou all for your replies.

Wendell, I had a look at the link you supplied - and found it very interesting, that's the most informative info I've come across relating to bands so far, Thankyou. Amy

Hi Amy,

INAMED had quite a few pages of information for patients and doctors on their website before ALLERGAN took them over. Some of the best, most accurate information that I have seen was on those pages.

I am having my first fill on 12/5/07 - was banded on 10-25-07. The first 3-weeks I lost 25 lbs but recently I haven't lost any. At first I wasn't even hungry but now it seems that I can eat more and really have to supress my hunger. I know some of it is probably head hunger but I can honestly say that I could eat more if I wanted to (of course I am watching everything that I eat - I really want this to work).

Did anyone else have this issue?

Will it be better after the fill?

Everyone on this board has been so generous with their experiences, I value your opinions.

hi, big fred, i was banded on 10/16/07 and had my first fill on 11/26/07, i also was feeling hunger about a 1 1/2 weeks before my fill, my doctor only put in 1/2 cc due to living so far away from his office and he didn't want any complications. i didn't think that a 1/2 cc would make any difference but it did help some. i go back in 2 weeks for another 1/2 cc. keep strong, if you just look toward your fill you will make it!!!! l herstine

That's normal. When a patient is newly banded, swelling of the stomach tissues often provide temporary restriction. When the swelling subsides, effective restriction is removed and the patient's hunger returns. Head hunger seems to be the worst at that time also. While few patients experience effective restriction on receiving their first fill, eventually effective restriction does happen, at which time most patients experience a dramatic lessening in hunger.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!
