The importance of trying new foods slowly

Recommended Posts

I am 7 months post RNY. I have had a piece of bread once and graham crackers multiple times. I thought no big deal lets try oatmeal. I made it with Water and added a little ground flax seed.

After a few bites I felt full so I stopped eating. A few hours later I was miserable and 4 hours later finally vomited it up. I felt better then worse and had a second episode. I don't know if it was just stuck or what but I don't think I will ever eat oatmeal again.

Today I have had only water and about half of a premier shake. It is so frustrating to feel like you take a step back.

No, I initially felt too full. Then a few hours later nauseated and pain in the middle of my back. I was shaky and needed a heating pad. My heart rate was up to the 90/100s but I think that's because I was miserable. I was really surprised that I still had that much oatmeal in my pouch hours later. I ate an ounce of steak at dinner but when i got sick 6 hours after dinner I think that had passed. I have had steak before multiple times. I tolerate ground beef, chicken etc so I was surprised that oatmeal seemed to get stuck.

I was also thinking the ground flax seed would balance out the carbs.

I almost finished a premier shake over the past 3 hours and now I am trying yogurt (I will try 5oz over an hour or 2). I will stick with soft foods today and know I am probably only going to get 300-400 calories in today. More burping today so it's definitely irritated.

It sounds as though it was stuck. Maybe it was undercooked and started to swell after you had eaten it?

Maybe, it was kind of watery but not soupy.
When this happens I feel bad the whole next day.
Is that normal to feel crappy once the ordeal is over 24 hours later?

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
