Question about post band colonoscopy

Recommended Posts

I'm considering getting banded, but I have a concern. My dad has had colon cancer and I have been told that I need to have a colonoscopy every 5 years.

I'm wondering if anyone has had a colonoscopy post banding and what kind of preparation were you able to do with the band in place? Will the preparation be a problem with the ban?

I know that getting rid of my extra weight would help me be healthier, but I also know that colon cancer is genetic and I have to have regular colonoscopies.

Thanks.

Beth

Its about time for me to start thinking about this too, we also have a family history of bowel cancer. Nobody in my immediate or extended family but in older generations. I assume the process will be pretty much unchanged by being banded - the band is afterall on the other end of your stomach.

But its one reason why I wont do the Protein first thing and continue to rely on wholegrains and lots of fruit and veg. Not that Protein is bad, but I try to get in a different balance rather than placing it as top priority.

Hi,

Yes you can still take your prep for a colonoscopy post banding, no problems there.

Hope this helps

I spoke with my Lapband doctor's office just this week on that same subject. I'm planning one for January. They just stated to contact them before because they would have to modify how I take the liquid they give prior to the procedure. Otherwise everythings the same.

I had colon cancer in 2007. My doctor said he would deflate the band before the colonoskopy then refil it afterwards.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
