Hello, I had my surgery 7-15-2019. I am starting to eat purée foods. I seem to not be really hungry, but I have been able to get almost 1000 calories down each day. Is that to many calories? I don’t want to harm my stomach, and I don’t want to stretch it out either. I am tolerating all of it...in fact it almost seems to easy to eat.

Every ones post op requirements are different for our surgeon we have a 300-400 cal a day max 20 days post op but I’ve seen a wide array of different requirements for each stage on here

My doctor doesn't let his patients start on the pureed stage until Weeks 3 - 4. The amount of calories he expects us to max out at due to our restriction (mine was a bypass) roughly works out to around the same amount the Mom_of_Chaos mentioned.

If your doctor gave you a post op diet to follow, I'd check to see if the calories were supposed to be limited. If it is not clear, but sure to call your doctor's office and ask.

I know the first 3 to 5 weeks after surgery is a time of healing and adapting so I'd ask sooner rather than later about the number of calories you can consume, but that is just my own thought. At least you would have peace of mind based on checking.

Best of luck!

Ask your doctor! They are really the most knowledgeable person & can calm any concerns you have. Best of luck!

I too have been having a fairly easy time of it and asked for calorie guidance. Puree/soft was 400-600/day with the eventual goal of 800-1200/day depending on activity levels. Hope this helps.

The idea is to take your time. Take advantage of the first month where you eat very little keep the calories low as long as you can...

How in hell are you gettin in 1000cals on a puree diet at 2 weeks? That's WAY too many cals. I was at around 300ish to 400 during that time. Concentrate on Protein. Ditch the effin carby crap and calorie dense rich food. This isn't magic bean surgery. It works quickly cuz it allows you an almost painless way to restrict the fu*k out of your calories and out of your food quantity to put you into dietary ketosis. Maximize your honeymoon period and don't squander it. A doc told me the first 2 months post surgery are when their patients lose the absolute MAXIMUM number or pounds. After that it's all downhill in the rate of loss department. They are able to do that cuz they are eating between 200-400 cals per day!!!!

Your so right @FluffyChix

People should be eating only Protein and very low calories the first few months if they can. Take advantage of the honeymoon period. Take advantage of the loss of appetite.

You should only be consuming protein for weeks nothing else.

I find it hard that people don't understand the guidelines or try to push their body to eat crap after everything that they went through to get surgery to just squander it away....

Don't be lazy pay attention. If you're unsure ask your Dr. Enjoy the restriction while you can!!!!

I'm surprised you're getting in that many calories. I would think it would be around 600 at this point. Watch yourself and what you're eating and be careful. Stick with Protein.

we were supposed to focus on fluids and Proteins at first and not worry about calories, so I'm not sure how many I got during the pureed stage, but I doubt if it was more than 500 or so. Once I started eating solid food and tracking, I was at 600-800 kcal for quite awhile.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
