Are you hungry all the time? Before I found IF, I would be if I ate higher carb. Now things are different for me...but I do find the more I eat and the more often I eat, the hungrier I am and the more fixated on the next meal event I am. What is your experience with this.

I saw this article on MFP:

4 Reasons Why You're Hungry All The Time

How many of them apply?

So I met with my nutritionist RN today and she was not helpful AT ALL. I am 4 weeks post op and she said I should be at 1300 calories a day!!!!!!! I looked at her like she had three heads. 1) who can eat that much 4 weeks post op?!!!! 2) the pamphlet my Dr gave me after surgery said i should be between 400-600 so I have no idea WTF she was talking about. I was like, that's super high my Dr said 600 ( and btw the RN is in the bariatric department!). I would gain weight if i ate that much, not that I can at this point. Anyway, rant over but then Drs wonder why we go to the internet for answers ( this is exhibit A your honor) . So anywhoo I find better information from others actually going through this process. I was doing IF and OMAD before Surgery.... what has your experience been of doing that post surgery? do you feel it works well for you or on such low calories, do you feel woozy? What is your eating window and do you ever fast for a full day?

I’m 8 months out and struggle mightily to get in >800 calories daily.
I’m probably an outlier though bc I avoid carbs (unless they’re in salad packs) and eat primarily meat and cheese and other dairy. Those things take up a lot of room in a sleeve

Until you can get in 65gm Protein daily with ease, I would focus more on TRE than on trying any kind of fast over 16-18 hours.
Even now I pretty much live in a 16:8 or 18:6 zone. Every now and then I’ll do a 24 hour fast, but I waited til 6 months post-op before I tried that

Eat real food hon. Let your tool do its job. Ditch the crap=Keto Ice Cream and Barney's Almond Butter with Lily's chips, Enlightened bar...WAY too much processed junk.

This is the time to break up with treats and nut up/knuckle down. Make your meals as lean and Protein forward as you can. Don't start using "crutches" at this point. It is WAY early and chances are you will stall out long before reaching goal.

This is the time to MAXIMIZE your weight loss. It's the time you will lose the most. Don't squander it. Follow your doc's plan. At this point I was at 1/4c per meal and 400-600 cals. ALL of it was protein + a bite or two of steamed veg + a tiny tiny amount of healthy fat (ie 1/2oz of avocado = 1/8 of an avocado).

100% agree.
I even went so far as to be in a bit of protein deficit (under 60gm daily) just so I could get in the habit of eating real food to get my nutrients in.
I allow myself ONE Protein Drink if I feel like I need it—otherwise all I eat is non-processed (okay i admit deli lunch meat is technically processed, but I don’t consider it snack food so I don’t count it as processed) food

REAL food.
No snack chips, Protein Bars, etc.

85-90% of what I put in my mouth is dairy, meat, or veggies.

ms.sss maybe start a new thread and call it what is on the menu for maintenance ?

Sooooooo 2 months later, I finally started up a spin-off thread of this one specifically for maintainers, so the relatively higher macro levels (or even lower-than-expected levels) consumed by those no longer in weight loss mode are kept in perspective, and doesn't scare the bejeezus of those who are ❤️

Plus its always fun to to see what people are eating (well, for me at least :) )

Here's the link for those interested:

Hi @Panda333, at this stage just try to get in what you can. You are doing great! No need to eat more beyond the full feeling. Your menu macros is more or less similar to mine at the same time in my progresssion (it was my last day of full liquids). For comparison, here was my menu at 3 weeks post op:

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
