Thanks for your responses. I may go with gallbladder. I am just worrying more about recovery time. An injured firefighter is like an injured quarterback. You sit the bench ... you loose your spot.

What did you end up doing?

On the Keto diet, because basically you are and because of that your tolerance for carbs and sugar are really low. As for the days off due to surgery tell them it was something personal. I was a teacher and had the band over summer and said nothing except to a few friends, they were worried because I was dropping weight quickly. Then one day one the meanest girls in the class said, you know we notice are you dying or something? I assured her I wasn't.

Hey, teacher here too, sleeved over the summer!!! I've told my two best friends who also work in the district, and one of them actually took me for my surgery. Any ideas on what to say to the rest of them when August comes?

I said I was doing a modified Keto diet, and I just wasn't hungry with it. I only had a few very funny happenings. Toward the end of the year, one of the students asked if I was dying as I kept getting smaller. Another thing that happened to me was my stomach was growling all of the time. During state testing when everyone was absolutely quietly working on their tests off would go my stomach for about 2 minutes. They were used to it so they tried to not laugh. When I told them I had to lose weight for health reasons they were very supportive, unusual for middle school students! Good luck!!! I'm now waiting for my insurance approval.

So you haven't even had the surgery yet! I used the same excuse- Keto diet during my pre-op diet. How long have you been on a pre-op diet for? I find it so odd how long it takes for the approvals from insurance. I feel like mine was done in no time.

I'm not worried about the kids, I'm more concerned with the other staff members. I teach in a very toxic environment- A teacher might come to you being supportive but behind your back she will say very mean things.

I had the lap band for 10 years, after many issues I had I removed a year ago. Then in March, I decided to return to freedom. I find the weight so hinders my ability to do what I want and it came back so fast after the band removal I started the process. It was over a 90-day "diet observation" with dieticians, which I knew more than them as I've done this for 9 years, then meeting with a nurse in food classes. A real eye roll as this nurse had not had the surgery and he was telling us how we would feel. The psych review now the wait. 3 weeks for insurance then schedule the surgery. I was a self-pay last time and only had to do the psych eval. I didn't want to pay again. You will find that as you are losing the weight some will be very supportive, then others jealous as we have all tried to lose but failed. The others will say you took the "easy" way out. I found after my journey then soon discovered it wasn't easy, and the started to look up to me for my decision. I think the hardest thing I had to adjust to was strangers would talk to me in stores, fat people are invisible and I never had strangers come up and start conversations. Good luck and ignore the haters. This is for you and not for them.

Wow, thanks for your inspiration. I was also banded - I was banded in 2005 and removed in 2018 due to a slippage. I told myself I wouldn't get another bariatric surgery but here I am with the sleeve! I had lost about 70lbs on the band initially then gained it all back plus some. When I had the band removed, I continued to gain more weight so that is why I decided to go forward with the sleeve. Hopefully this process goes by smooth and quickly. You'll have to let me know when you get a date set!

Wow, banded 2005 too with the old style band. I lost close to 100 and gained 20 back. Had a Tummy Tuck, almost died from clots. Then started to gain the weight back. Very slowly at first and when I went in for adjustments I kept getting sick, that was when they admitted it might have slipped, I had to ask to have it removed they never suggested it. My sister had the sleeve and went from size 18 to 10 and was doing great, but decided she wanted to eat her way and drank diet sodas from the beginning. Now she has put on weight and is working to get it off. Her surgery was 2006 or 7. I know I can eat the right way and I've not had a carbonated drink since 2005. I wasn't going to do the surgery but my knees can't take this weight and I don't want to spend the rest of my life sitting in a chair. We have a boat and I can't swim in the lake this year because I can't get up the ladder. So I'm ready for the big step because the rewards are worth it. I have my Protein Drinks stored up. Do you drink any clear Protein drinks? I'm not sure which is better, I can't do artificial sweeteners as I get headaches.

I drink Premier Protein drinks - Pic attached. How is it possible to eat and drink soda from the get go? Didn't her stomach stretch? NO leaks? That's unbelievable.

Some people just live a charmed life while others struggle and try their best to follow all the rules set down. But as the snake said after biting and injecting venom--
THAT'S LIFE IN THR JUNGLE, BABY!

This was brought up in a 2015 forum....But I need an excuse. to tell my coworkers. If they found out I will loose my spot. I am a firefighter , so they will have no mercy.
I am wondering if doctor will tell them what I am having surgery on or speak to ones on my list while the ones, I don't want to know are present or have visitors come, the nurse or doctor may talk to me in front of them. Good luck keeping your secret.

LOL that would not work in my dept. They'd have me having some extreme crazy surgery lol. I work with a lot of nosy folks.

In the south, we can be passive-aggressive in a very disarming way. When people ask you if you're losing weight just say "why thank you what a nice thing to say." then nothing else. Just respond with kind words and no answers. Then when you are ready you can say something. I was down 70 pounds before I said something.

Yeah I do like the Passive-Agressive approach. Since I am a little farther North in the Midwest I would say similar to "If you will forgive me for not answering , I will forgive you for the poor taste in Asking in the First Place!" You really don't owe Anyone an Explanation!

I had a lot of nosy coworkers as well. And the gossip about the “unknown” no matter what it was about was outrageous! When I had a previous surgery, I didn’t tell anyone what it was for. The super asked me for auth to disclose to staff and I refused. I loved hearing the rumors about me! Some folks were very inventive in their attempts to get me to “spill”. I never did. Some folks got very angry and expressed their anger to me. I still kept silent.

One of my coworkers actually brought up the issue at a staff mtg. The super asked me to comment. I politely stated that a was overwhelmed with my coworkers concerns, however, my healthcare is a very personal issue and it should remain as such. And that it is never a demonstration of professionalism to share with anyone during working hrs, their personal issues, no matter what they may be. You’re right if you are thinking I was not a personal favorite from then on. However, no coworker ever wasted my time with useless gossip after that.

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
