Revision surgery from Lap Band to Gastric Sleeve

Recommended Posts

I just saw my gastric surgeon today and he definitely suggests taking out my Lap Band but revising it to gastric sleeve. I am quite confused, which one should I do, sleeve or mini gastric bypass?

Thanks everybody for answering, in advance

I was in the same boat. I had my band removed and did the sleeve. I'm only 2 1/2 months out and very happy with the results. I had a lot of acid reflux when I had the band (because it slipped) so my surgeon had me do extra tests to make sure that the sleeve was a good option for me vs gastric bypass. We decided it was and I have to say I'm very happy with it so far. I'm on daily acid reflux medication as a precaution but I haven't experienced any reflux since surgery. Good luck.

@Lelina

what was the reason doc suggested sleeve over mini gastric bypass?

it's always good to listen to your surgeon - butttt find answers to your questions before

you make a major decision between surgeries.

read up on the two (2) surgeries, talk to doc again, then you'll be more informed as to

which WLS is better for you. At the end of the day, its your body and choice!☺️

knowledge is power!!

good luck

Thanks for the information, NYCPAULA! How is weight loss with the sleeve?

one of the reasons is that at a hospital where he works, they don't do bypass since they don't have the thoracic surgeon. One has to be around since bypass is a very risky surgery. That's why I would like to hear what people who experienced it think.

Pretty well so far. I've lost over 40 pounds in about 10 weeks.

I didn't find it scary, I was more scared of throwing 3/4 of my stomach away. Oh I know it hadn't been doing right by me but I had donated enough things in my body to science, they weren't going to throw my stomach in Surgical Waste, I had gotten emotionally attached to the old bag of gastric muscle even with Hector , my first ulcer in there! And I knew that the chances of VSG curing my GERD was slim to none so it was always going to be RNY for me!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
