Post-Menopausal Women and WLS

Recommended Posts

Some posters have commented that post-menopausal women (I am one) have a more difficult time losing weight and do so at a slower pace. Is this true? Has anyone any personal experiences, advice, or successes to relate?

Weight loss is different for each of us. There is no way to predict how much or fast you will lose. I’m post menopause and my weight loss was fast. I see others that have lost at a slower rate.

It’s ok to lose slowly. What matters is losing the weight and getting healthy, Right?

I am going through the menopause right now. I lost slowly in comparison to some but others may have lost slower than me, its all relative. I do know I have lost almost 100lbs since starting last year and I feel fantastic!

I'm post-menopausal and mine is going what I would consider to be slowly, but I have to keep reminding myself that slow loss is better than no loss at all.

people lose at all different rates for all different reasons (age, gender, starting BMI, metabolic rate, whether or not you lost a lot of weight before surgery). I'm sure menopause can be a factor. I was post-menopausal when I had surgery, but I don't know how much of a role that played. I also lost 57 lbs before surgery, and that likely played a part, too. Yes - I was a slow loser, but I was very committed to my program, esp that first year, and I lost all my excess weight.

I was 58 when I had my surgery. Lost over 100 lbs. the first year and hit goal (122 lbs) shortly thereafter. Don't let age be your deciding factor.

I had surgery at age 60 and I have lost slowly and am still working on it. My health has dramatically improved and I feel so much better and younger than I did this time last year. It is hard sometimes not to compare myself with others but this journey is different for everyone.

Well mine, at 73, is what it is. Not that predictable, didnt, plan for stenosis, ulceration, PICC line, pneumonia ( none bacterial, not quite viral, what does that leave? Fungal? ) Well I can be a Fun Gal dont think that was they had in . mind! Finish off with March, the month of Iron and Reclast infusions. And then there was the 30 pound weight drop and n ow I have had upper right surgery, last Thursday, and this one I am not Shaking off too good. Had to have hardware from my surgical repair of humerus removed, been b.s. 9 years and I it kind of turned against me, some speculation that could have caused the pneumonia, a pocket of something. While ortho in there he decided to fix up my rotator cuff instead of of bringing me back for another surgery in a couple months. Yeeouch, I know someone who's getting a 5 inch lump of coal in his stocking this year! Lest you doubt me, I can go to Coshocton county, one county to the East, they have veins of coal, still do some minor min ing there. Just think my body temporarily had enough no o

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
