Hi everyone! I'm new to these forums and I'm so happy to find them. This might be a bit of a venting sesh/rant. I don't know anyone who had gastric bypass and I don't want to bother my doctor or dietician every 2.2 seconds with questions. I just need to feel like I'm not alone in this. I felt like I was doing okay for a bit. I'm having issues with the Protein intake. I'm sick of the taste and the smell of it makes me nauseous. I'm sure many of you experienced this. How did you get past this? Today I felt weak. I'm getting in my liquids but I just feel sort of hopeless and tired. I don't know what mood I'm going to get each day and I feel frustrated. I already suffer with anxiety and it's heightened now. I don't even want to check my weight on the scale because I'm scared I didn't lose enough because I'm super impatient and expect instant results which isn't realistic of course.

I'm so happy and grateful that I did this surgery. It's something I've been wanting for a long time but I'm just about ready to give up and it's only been 9 days since my surgery on March 23rd. I'm sitting with a Protein Shake right now typing this and it just makes me feel sick. I literally never want to have a protein shake for the rest of my life. I'm not really craving fatty foods. I was craving some on my first 2 days post op but now i just want to get to the soft foods phase so I can at least feel like I'm nourishing my body. I'm terrified of the unknown and I'm afraid of failing. It's tough trying to figure out what my body is telling me. I still don't understand if I'm feeling hunger pangs or if it's just a stomach ache.

I have my 2 week follow up with my doctor in a few days but I'm just looking to talk to people who've been through this and maybe help ease some of my anxiety about the unknown. I'm just scared and feel alone. Sorry for the Debbie Downer rant.

I haven't made it to the losers bench yet, but from everything I've read and heard what you're experiencing is totally normal. Your body has just been through a traumatic change, and with it comes a lot of adjustment.

You're healing. That means that you're going to be more susceptible to emotional swings, including anxiety. Everything is going to feel bigger, more serious, worse than it would when you are at your best. You're learning how to nourish your now very different body, and to top it all off, the stores of estrogen that have been in your fat cells for years are now flooding your bloodstream making you feel all kinds of crazy.

There's a phrase that I've read quite a lot on these boards... Embrace the suck. Protein Shakes suck. Pain sucks. Stalls suck. Own it, and then try to look forward. This is phase to be gotten through on your way to a better, healthier you.

I can't stomach whey Protein. The smell is off putting and I gag taking a drink. I've been short on protein, but am making my goals now that I'm 5 weeks post-op. I used high protein yogurt and fairlife milk to get closer to my goals. They have chocolate, but it's not my thing. I ate a lot of bean dishes, you can puree them. Good luck, you will get there!

Yeah why is whey so gross?! I know we all made this decision to better our lives but they need to figure out how to make Protein taste better haha. I have protein breath and burps as well so it’s just constantly on me and I can’t get rid of it. I start the purée diet on Friday and it’s taking everything in me not to start it early. I’ve had the fairlife chocolate before. I love it! I love fairlife milk in general. It tastes so much better than other mills. l’ll ask my doctor and dietician if the chocolate is allowed yet or at all for my plan.

Also Mrsgamgee, I love that mantra and I’ll keep repeating it in my head until this liquid phase is done.

The one thing frustrating me is knowing that this would be difficult but now that I’m in it, I had no idea just trying to keep liquids down would be so hard. I’m glad that I’m not the only one. Hopefully I can stop feeling crazy soon!

My nutritionist told me the chocolate fairlife is a good protein source. 12 oz is 19g and qualifies for my program. It has to have 20g and under 200 calories, which it is 190. However, I prefer to drink it plain. I have never liked sweet beverages, weird I know. I prefer to eat my calories lol

Oh good to know! I loved it before surgery so at least I can keep having it haha. I was a big sweets and Desserts person and now the thought of sugar is making me sick so who knows? Maybe I’ll end up no longer liking it haha. I’m so much happier when I’m having broth lol

I took a lot of anti nausea & gasX the 1st 2 months post op. My daughter didn’t start feeling well until she could add eggs & soft foods after her surgery.

Does your insurance have a nutritious you can speak with? We have Cigna & they called me every week for the 1st 2 months.

I’m thinking that I need to get anti nausea meds because it’s too much now. I just cried over my Soup broth haha! My doctor prescribed Metoclopramide for the nausea but it doesn’t seem to be helping :(

im looking forward to soft foods so I can have eggs and feel like I’m feeding my body.

I actually have a follow up visit with my nutritionist this Friday so hopefully we can figure out ways to help me but by then the liquids will be done hopefully! I know I just have 4 more days on it but it is tough. I just hope the days fly by.

Oh god the protein breath. I chew gum and just make sure not to swallow it. Protein breath might be worse than coffee breath!

When I had Protein (which was actually not for very long) I used plant based. I couldn't stomach the whey.

It is so normal to feel the way you're feeling right now. The light at the end of the tunnel is so so close for you, You're almost there!!! YOu got this. I remembered, I was putting Cereal, chicken, steak in my mouth on my second week just to chew and taste it, then I'd spit it out.

I also HATED the Protein Shakes.

Good Luck. Hope to hear your progress here soon. I'm sure it will be a happier version of you soon enough :-)

Thank you! I have having such a meltdown wondering if I could do this but everyone on this forum has been so kind and helpful! Haha I wanted to do that with some potato wedges this week. They smelled so good but I resisted and had my sad Protein Shake. I have a day and a half left on these Protein Shakes so I cannot wait for my next phase! So at least I can be happy for myself for making it through the most tough part!

I also can't have whey Protein - not because I think it's gross, but because it makes me vomit. NowSports chocolate Soy Isolate is good! But really, I totally eff'd up on protein until like the 3 month mark. I got like 10g a day. Since whey made me vomit and I hadn't really found another kind that tasted okay, I just didn't drink any shakes at all. I lived. Try other Proteins like pea, rice, egg, animal, or soy. And if you don't hit your goal right off the bat, don't sweat it.

My dietician recommended Isopure Protein Drink. It has been a lifesaver! I mean it has 40g of protein in one bottle and it's not creamy. I started getting nauseous while drinking the whey protein. I've been using Unjury. Their chicken broth tastes great but then it has that whey protein smell and it made me nauseous while I was drinking it. So I stopped with the Unjury and switched to Isopure and GNC Lean 25 shakes. I think I'm so tired with the creamy shakes. I think what works best is using 2-3 different brands because everyone has their own different flavor.

I just have one day left on full liquids and I couldn't be happier! :696_tada:

Glad it's working out. I can't have isopure because it's also whey.

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I'm in Houston so kind of near you and had the sleeve in Dec. Down 61 lbs. Feeling better. Was definitely worth it. I hope the everything is going well for you. Update us when you can!

I am back home after my bypass surgery in Tiajuana. I'm post op day 4. Everything went great! I guess I'm one of the lucky ones who have not encountered much pain at all, no nausea thus far and I'm having no problem keeping down broths and water. Thank you for your well wishes. I cant wait to keep up this journey and have a chance at better health and simply better quality of life. I know there will be bumps in the road ahead, and everything won't be peaches and cream, but at least I have a great start so far. 😍

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

      2. Doughgurl

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!
