Eating for the first time did NOT go well!

Recommended Posts

I made a hard boiled egg and used 2tsp of low fat mayo and then thinned it with Pickle Juice until it was applesauce consistency. My written out diet said to eat a quarter to a half a cup. I served myself a quarter. I ate about 3Tbsp of it. I ate it at 12:30... I was in SO MUCH PAIN I felt like it needed to come out one way or anther until 9:30 pm. I felt nauseas the whole time but never threw up. I was alone and afraid of what throwing up my do to my incisions. (I had surgery on March 14th I'm 12 days post op) I couldn't eat or drink or get out of my bed (because I also ended up getting extremely cold) today I'm afraid to eat or drink. I did force 1Tbsp of yogurt in and I'm trying to drink too but not doing well. I never want to eat again. I feel so anxious. Anyone else expierience this and have any idea where I went wrong??? Maybe I ate too much? Maybe low get mayo is not ok? Maybe I used too much pickle juice?

So sorry! Hard lesson learned - many people don't tolerate eggs well for a long time. Also, the Pickle Juice may have irritated your sewn tummy. Hope you feel better soon. I could only do 1/4 cup for a long time. Maybe you can try soft fish (I poached tilapia) or Protein oatmeal for starters. Good luck!

Are you on soft or purée? Egg might be too difficult at this stage, maybe try sticking to things that blend easily with no lumps. Yogurt, custard, cooked veg etc

Puree. I'm supposed to puree foods to applesauce consistency. If been eating yogurt ok but can only eat about two Tbsp. What exactly is custard? It sounds good lol. How so I make that? I think I'm supposed to focus on Protein though.

I'm nearly 7 weeks out and I still find it hard to tolerate eggs - they are really hard to chew into a mush, which is what I have learnt the hard way that we need to do before swallowing. I would give those a break for now until later and then revisit it to see how you do. Right now at your phase I'd be sticking with things like refried Beans, yoghurt, etc.

My surgery was on 3-11. I ate a egg over easy mushed it up as fine as I could. Took me around 45 min to eat it. I was full for hours. Down side is about 30 min after eating I had to go to bathroom 4 times. It was horrible. All that trouble over one lil egg. Not sure it’s worth it. Lol. I too am scared about eating.

My surgery was 2/12. I am in the soft food stage. I tried an egg on the first day I started soft foods ( I wanted to die). My main Protein sources are ground chicken, ground turkey, fish and yogurt plus my every day 4 oz Protein Shake. When I started the soft food stage I was so excited to eat something not liquid and purée, but I still have days I would not mind it again. I can eat 1/4 c of what ever I’m eating. I am cleared to start eating raw fruit and veggies. I had a slice of seedless cucumber yesterday and it went well. Today I will have a cherry Tomato with my lunch. Just keep trying. My nutritionist has a great rule that I have used. When you eat something and it upsets you or causes the day long “ I want to die “ feeling the next day go back to a few Protein Shakes and full liquids. I’ve used it now 2 times in 2 weeks it helped. Everyday is a new lesson we learn with our new stomach.

I know you are early on but when using mayo, my nutritionist recommends mixing it with Greek yogurt. 1 part mayo to 3 parts yogurt. less fat and calories and the mayo gives its flavor to the mayo. perfect in egg salad, tuna salad , chicken salad etc later on.

I don't have a plan that says puree then soft foods. I'm really confused about what I can eat I guess at this stage. I'll mix the mayo with yogurt from now on if I use it.

Here is some info from Kaiser (my plan is them). Always check with your team if unsure, but hopefully this will help.

Remember you don't need to finish all of it, that was the hardest part for me to learn. Also listen to your body, I have learned when approaching fullness my nose gets a sniffle and that's the sign for me to stop. 👍

7 months and my pouch does not accept eggs in any form, cottage cheese, Peanut Butter and bananas, all of which were go-tos and old friends in my pre-surgical past. And to be honest I have pretty much lost my will to eat, not even with me rationalizing its "fuel", can't be bothered ,the Fuel Tank, let's just let it run dry its NBT totally. Not anorexia more like food indifference, that's why,i went ahead and prepared that other, a flash of Oh That Might Be Good and I couldn't keep it down! 💦

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
