That is so nice, thank you very much. Half of this is not having anyone to talk through it with. My family isn’t exactly supportive.... they’re not NOT supportive, though. If that makes sense.

I didn’t tell my mom until a month or two before surgery because there’s SO much baggage between us when it comes to weight. After surgery I set some specific rules for my family and what kinds of things they could say/mention re: surgery, and that’s helped me a lot. It’s hard because none of them struggle with weight beyond like wanting to lose 10-15 lbs so they didn’t and couldn’t and can’t understand the decision or the process.

I find the journaling to be a helpful way to have a dialogue with myself when I don’t have someone else to talk it through with! I also find it helpful to just let my mind vomit out all the things I am terrified about so then I can take a step back and weed through what is rational and worth considering versus what is just my anxiety brain doing its thing, you know?

My family doesn’t know. My mom knows I went on a liquid diet per my dr recommendation (which was the truth). Two girls I work with know, my fiancé (but my stepson), and two friends. I don’t want to deal with people being unsupportive, so I only told people that I knew would be supportive. The reality is some people won’t be supportive and that’s ok, but they don’t need to be a part of your journey. Feel free to reach out if you need someone! You’re going to do Great!

Just to play devils advocate. My Dr wanted me to do the duodenal switch, but I was adamant I wanted the sleeve. If down the road I decide I'm gaining weight and want to I can do a revision to RNY. I like the fact there is no dumping and no malabsorption.

I don't know the statistics on weight gain, but I worked with a girl who had the Rny and she previously weighed 600 lbs, I saw pictures. When I started working with her she weighed 220. By the end of one 1 year she had gained back to 400 lbs. Not sure how this is even possible?

So I'm not sure if you can gain with either one?

Personally, I don't ever want to he super thin. So, it might be something to think about. If you want to be thin, I think rny offers a better, longer weight loss future.

Best wishes. You will do great!

I had the bypass 7 months ago. I have lost 110lbs so far. No regrets. I am still baffled about how/why people think the sleeve is the “easier” surgery. Nothing easy about either surgery

I chose the sleeve over bypass 4 years ago. I cannot say that is was wrong choice at that time in my life. I know WLS saved my life. Now, I am getting revised for múltiple reason including never getting to a healthy weight, GERD and a hernia plus my sleeve was never a sleeve.

Just looking for some reassurance. I went in thinking I wanted a gastric sleeve, and my surgeon basically told me I wouldn’t lose the weight and I would gain it back. His recommendation is gastric bypass. I am petrified of the surgery, and long term implications or problems I could have as a result. I should be excited about the opportunity to change my life, but instead I am scared I won’t like what my life turns into. Would love to hear some long term success stories. Thanks in advance.

LAP BAND SUCCESS RATE
47%
GASTRIC SLEEVE SUCCESS RATE
80%
GASTRIC BYPASS SUCCESS RATE
85%
DUODENAL SWITCH SUCCESS RATE
95%

Data Sources: PubMed: Quick fix or long-term cure? Pros and cons of bariatric surgery and International Journal of Surgery: Long term predictors of success after laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy

The line graphs above show patients who have lost more than 50% of their excess weight and managed to keep it off for more than 5 years. The popularity of the Lap Band has dropped significantly due to the long-term complication rate and low success rate.

Nothing easy about any type of bariatric porcedure. They all take work.

I had the sleeve in 2014 - I got to goal in six months which is not the norm according to the statistics.

I do wish I had asked more specifically why gastric bypass. I am wondering if it has to do with my lifelong yo-yo dieting and hypothyroidism. It has gotten harder and harder to even lose weight on diets, even the really extreme ones.

I'm 125 days post-op today and hit 60 pounds lost since surgery, 70 since I started. When I was researching, I noticed a trend of quite a few people regretting either surgery the first 1-2 months and I went through he same thing. I think it is a combination of hormone imbalance from losing the weight and the totality of surgery finally sinking in.

I went with the bypass because that is the only surgery my insurance would cover. Some days I start to feel a little regret and miss some of my past life, but I just keep reminding myself of the feelings and emotions I had to start this journey and move on. Think of surgery as a reset on life and your health. You will re-learn how and what to eat and pay for it if you make a mistake - this negative reinforcement can be a strong motivator!

My neighbor had gastric bypass 8-9 years ago and went from 340 to 160 and he is now 60 years old, Saturday night went out with some friends and ate more food in one meal then I currently eat in 5 days, so it's not like life is changed forever, just the immediate short term. With either surgery it IS very possible to eat your way back out of it, but why would you want to go through all this and not be successful? If so, then there are other issues at hand.

I work with someone who had the sleeve, they are gaining their weigh back after a year and a half. I am 6 months out and have absolutely no regrets with my RNY. To have long tern success you have to follow the rules. Also from my own research the RNY has much better long term results.

How could she regain? Only thing that comes to mind, Constant grazing with higher calorie foods, because as a 7 monther, almost, there just Isn't That much room in a Pouch that is the size of an egg, and we don't mean a "Turkey" One, Precious Pouch only accepts 2 oz, I have not made it past 4oz without catastrophic conclusions, and I sure don't enjoy upchucking, not that I ever truly did! 😖

I’m preparing for a sleeve to bypass revision due to GERD next Thursday. That aside, I believe stats show that bypass and sleeve patients lose the same average % of excess weight but bypass patients lose it faster. I liked sleeve because it was less intrusive but it clearly didn’t work for me.

They didn't stay away from Soda. Once they healed they were right back to it. I have eyes they are definitely gaining it back. Maybe they stretched their pouch.

i know i literally just posted a "yup. i regret this." thread about 3 weeks ago - but it was more out of frustration over the complications i had. i am anxious to lose another 60lbs. i hope i get there. i could be the most impatient person in this entire forum, lol. now that things seem to be normalizing as far as not having stupid issues, i don't feel so bad about it. i am glad i've lost what i have so far. i didn't have any support either. and when i was going through the complications, my mother was like "i told you so". i picked gastric bypass because i wanted the absorption and dumping; i wanted the negative reinforcements to eat correctly. and also i had acid reflux and sleeve makes that worse, usually.

i know several people who had the surgery who regained the weight because they could somehow eat whatever they wanted without consequence. fortunately that doesn't happen to me (yet). if you don't ever put that food in your mouth after surgery, you'll never know if it will make you sick or not, so it's best not to even try. my boss has regained 40lbs and eats mounds of mac n cheese and pizza and donuts, etc. he had surgery 6 years ago. my coworker's daughter-in-law can eat whatever she wants and regained her entire weight lost (100lbs). it's just a tool, not a cure. but i firmly believe if you don't test your limits, you won't have an issue. why risk it.

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!
