How did you calm your nerves before surgery?

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone, I'm new to posting but have lurked here before and I'm so thankful for this community and all information and stories shared. I'm having my VSG surgery in 2 days 2/25/19 and I'm incredibly nervous, excited, terrified, happy...Just a mess of emotions. It doesn't help that I've never had surgery before. I'm sure these feelings are normal but I'm typically a zen, chilled out person so my question is... what are some things you did PRE-OP to calm your nerves before surgery?

Oh nice and congratulations on your surgery date. Keep in mind that we are the lucky few and that not everyone is as fortunate as us to be able to have this done. I have had a few surgeries in the past and nerves are usually there, it's natural. I just surrender to them and remind myself that my personal experience of the surgery will be- I will go to sleep and then I will wake up, it's that simple.... and it happens that fast. Good Luck Monday, my surgery was on a Monday too. :)

I'm a music person. Had my favorite playlist on my phone and cranked up the headphones before surgery. For me, that lets me block out everything else. If I woke up singing my rendition of a FloRida song, nobody told me!

Thank you! And that is true about not everyone having the opportunity to get this life improving procedure done.

[emoji23] A ready to go playlist it will be. I'll be sure to add FloRida's "Low" on there.

👍 Dance music just puts my head in a really good place, know what I mean? I'm having another surgery on Wednesday for my gall bladder and Pandora will be at my side!

I tried not to think about it, but that didn't work. I prayed and let it go about 20 times[emoji1]
The night before surgery, my husband and I had an argument simply because he could tell "something" was on my mind. I cried and [emoji24]. Then the morning of surgery, I had peace about it. Some things may or may not work, but deep down you just KNOW you're going to do well. I finally figured that out the morning of...

Surgery twins! Thank you and good luck on your surgery as well. You'll do great. My Dr said all I have to do is ask and I'll be calm as a clam.

I didn't have the time to have nerves. Once I entered the hospital, someone was having problems with their IV, and they had to take the medicines 1 hour before surgery, so she and I switched places. 40 minutes after entering the hospital, i was under. It went so quick that I did not have time to adjust. They should have given me a couple of minutes to relax, but yeah, maybe for the best?

Lucky you. I waited over an hour to be called back to the PRE-OP area. But once things got going, it went by quickly. Plus, they gave me stuff to feel good.

Thanks to everyone for the advice. I took in everything that was said. Surgery went well and now I'm home. The nurses on the Bariatric floor said I was their star patient. I was up and walking and doing laps as soon as I felt I could. I have a lot of pain in the incision site where they took my stomach and gallbladder out. I think if it was just vsg, I would be in little to no pain. But I'm home resting, walking and sipping Water. Thanks everyone!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Your so close now! It's gonna be great :) Wishing you a speedy recovery and looking forward to seeing how it goes!

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
