How’d you Choose? Sleeve v.s. Bypass?

Recommended Posts

I am having RNY since I have GERD issues. However, even without that issue, I would have pushed for the RNY for myself. I just felt it was the best option for me in resolving my severe sleep apnea, high blood pressure and avoiding the diabetes that runs in my immediate family.

It really comes down to a personal choice between yourself and your surgeon.

There are LOTS of very successful, inspiring people on this board who have done well with either surgery! :)

My surgeon is letting me decide, but he said if it was up to him he’d be leaning towards the bypass because of my BMI being very high and the bypass tends to be more effective for morbidly obese people.

I’m sure I could probably do just as well with the sleeve, and it being less invasive is tempting, but I see quite a bit of people going from sleeve to bypass for different reasons and I only want to do this once. So bypass scheduled for 05/13

And now the May 2019s are starting to show up. A warm friendly welcome to both of you. I am an RnY of 6 1/2 months, had some setbacks but I do not regret the choice I made. For me it was the very best, and as I lose weight, getting fitter and healthier, I can only be grateful that my past is behind me!

I'm eligible to get either .... my gut no pun intended just told me to go for the bypass. That and i've met quite a few people who did the sleeve but ended up getting it revised to a bypass later on

Gastric Bypass for me it is. I kind of wish my insurance covered the duodenal switch tho.

Same as you I chose bypass as it's the best and more aggressive and was unable to get DS

I chose the sleeve because that is what my dr picked for me. I only have 48 lbs to lose now. And I’m 65 and can follow a plan, just have a bad hip and neck so fast exercise kills me. I’m loving my new tool.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
