March Bypass Buddies

Recommended Posts

Sounds like we are all having similar issues. These first two weeks are the hardest as we try to get in our fluids and Protein. My doc wasn’t kidding it IS a full time job. My program has 2 high Protein Shakes and 3, 2 ounce meals of full liquids/puréed food. Last night I took 1.5ounces of chicken a tbsp of low fat ricotta and a tbsp of Tomato sauce and put it in the food processor with a dash of broth then heated it in the microwave. Tasted like heaven! 😊 Anyone else have any yummy ideas for 2 ounces of protein?

I've been good until last evening. I think I had too much fluid/protein within a couple of hours. My stomach felt uncomfortable then it started cramping. A couple hours later I threw up 4 or 5 times. It was just frothy liquid but it hurt like the devil. For a few hours I was feeling like I was going to die. Sounds like dumping but I didn't have anything I shouldn't. Just Water and Protein Shakes. I feel much better today, but I'm being very cautious about the amount of liquids I'm taking in per hour. And I have not yet taken in the amount of liquids or Protein I should be. I just feel too full.

On another note I haven't had a bowel movement in over a week (before surgery). I'm calling the Dr. office tomorrow to discuss both these issues.

I’ve also had the shakes sit in my stomach for a while and cause over- fullness. I tried a small sip of Water after an ounce of Protein to help it go down. Seemed to work. What are your targets for Protein and Water at this point? Woohoo we are 1 week into this!

I had surgery on the 12th and am having the same problem. First time it happened, I was in bed asleep. Hoping it doesn’t last long.

Same here. Surgery on 3/13 and still happening

Checking in to see how things are going. My situation subsided a day or two ago. Hoping you’re feeling better!

I’m having issues with getting the Protein in, and getting Vitamins down, I’m crushing the Vitamins and taking with a bite of applesauce, but I’m still gagging trying to swallow it. Doing fine with Water, although sometimes I take too big a sip and it’s really painful. I know this is what I signed up for, but just needed to vent a little.
I know what you mean! Whenever I feel the incision pain flare up or a “hard” swallow of Water hurt...I think the same thing. This is what I asked for!

Not that I want any problems or issues but I am worried as to when it may happen. I am a 10 Days postop and have had no side effects. Got out of the hospital at 24 hours on Tylenol. Started purée 3 days ago and all has gone really smoothly. I drink about 4 ounces of Water every 15 minuets.

I would say you are past the point of these early issues if you haven’t experienced them yet. Everyone is different and this is quite a journey! Keep up the great work!! Are you walking regularly?

Claricey,

I'm supposed to work up to 60 grams of Protein and 64 ounces of fluids. I'm only getting about 30 protein and about 50 fluids.

I am up walking all the time. Not outside but just trying to keep busy at home. I have never really been a TV watcher so I am getting bored. My surgeon made me take off 4 weeks so I am looking for things to keep me busy. I live in Minnesota if the weather was warmer I would spend most of my time outside.

Can I ask a question? Cuz I just had my sleeve surgery.. why do people get the sleeve and then decide to go to bypass surgery?
You should start a new thread of you want some answers to your question. But basically, most sleeve to GB revisions are due to reflux issues. Sometimes other reasons, too.

Claricey, I’m still having some issues, but nothing like a few days ago. Glad you’re healing well. I guess we just take it day by day.

Anyone else have (sorry for tmi) very loose stool almost like diarrhea? Surgery was Monday 3/11 and I’ve had it since yesterday. Will call Dr tomorrow. Also has anyone weighed themselves? I figured since I’ve had nothing but liquids and they’re going through me I’d have lost something. Well folks I am 6 pounds UP. I’m not discouraged yet as I am still swollen. But it was a bit of a kick in the shorts.
You're supposed to have those kind of stools and I was at 276 pre-surgery and up 10lbs to 286 post-surgery but am now down to 275 4 days out.

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
