What questions should I ask?

Recommended Posts

I'm very new to the WLS journey - I have my first consultation with a surgeon in two weeks. Can y'all think of any questions I should plan on asking?

Thanks!

Be emotionally brave, don't be defensive, your surgeon will not be that shocked but what you say but try to convey that anything food-wise bad, now you're commited to better diet and will listen to his or her suggestions. Make sure you like this person, trust this person, for you may have a relationship. for years. My doctor and I are commited to my future health. People here know mine story has not been a textbook one but I believe in my Dr Needleman's advice and with his help, I will still claim my victory also. And I will probably have contact with O.S.U. hospital the rest of my life. They don't stop with your surgery, they want to help you become successful.

Thanks for the suggestions. I hadn't heard the term bougie yet, but I looked it up and will be sure to ask.

The main thing I'm worried about, especially after two comments about emotional health, is that I'm a cryer. I know I'll start crying in the office despite whatever I do to try not to, and I'm afraid he won't see me as being emotionally stable enough.

I asked my surgeon if he did other surgeries and if so what percentage of his practice was bariatric?

Is the hospital he practices at a center of excellence?

Is he accredited as a surgeon of excellence?

Does he have a surgical team he routinely uses?

If so how long have they been working together?

Has he had any patient deaths and if so, under what circumstances?

How long has he been doing bariatric surgery and how was he trained?

I also recommend this book . It's available on Amazon.com, eBay and may be available at your local library.1548629771005.jpeg

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.
