Anti depressants post op

Recommended Posts

I was able to take my psych meds literally the morning after surgery, I had VSG. If you are taking any extended release, you cannot crush those so you will need to be able to take them whole. I think it all depends on what your doctor says and what your stomach can handle. I didn’t realize so many of us suffer from so many mental issues. I suffer from Major Depressive Disorder and OCD. If anyone feels like talking feel free to DM me, or we can exchange email addresses if you would like. It might be nice to talk to someone with similar issues as mine. My wife was sleeved 2 months before me, but she doesn’t suffer from any mental issues like I do.

It really is amazing how many of us deal with mental health. And even more amazing that society often treats us like our weight is the reason.

I'm working on my PhD in Health Psychology and I plan on doing my dissertation on how therapy effects the longterm success of bariatric patients.

People forget it's a chemical imbalance. And when we have part of our stomach removed, not only are we losing access to serotonin (90%of it is produced in our gut, not our brain), which controls our mood, we're losing our main coping tool, and we're releasing hormones from our fat stores !

Basically we can become a hot mess! 🤣

I am on the same thing. My psychiatrist split the Wellbutrin into two doses. I take 200 - so 100 twice a day. Since the Cymbalta has to be opened up, studies show one may not be getting 100 percent of the dosage. I am now on 60 mg twice a day. I was having a terrible time because my psych meds were not right until this change was made. I’m not totally ok yet, but it’s only been a couple of weeks. I am feeling better every day though. The study I’m speaking of my psych doc found while I was in his office. If you remain on the same dosage, you’ll only get 60 percent of the prescribed Cymbalta dosage. Good luck!

I've had such a hard time with getting my mental health meds related. I'm finally settled on respirodone and prozac.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
