Is this as emotional for you as it is for me?

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone in a couple days on Tuesday December 18th 2018 I will be having gastric bypass surgery. I am quite emotional and scared yet very happy that I am finally taking this step towards my weight-loss Journey. I have been overweight for most of my life and my weight has kept me from living my life and doing a lot of things that I have wanted to do. My obesity peaked after by 21st birthday. Which is when I hit the two hundreds. But as long as I can remember I have never been a skinny child. It is just so emotional for me to finally take the most drastic and gigantic step towards losing weight which is the gastric bypass surgery. A part of me is so happy and so thrilled to start this new chapter of my life. But yet the other part of me is so emotional how do you all feel?

And bad sad news to relate but I am going to warn you. After surgery and you start to lose weight you're going to stay pretty emotional. A nasty fact is a lot of hormones and chemicals are fat- soluable. As your fat melts off ( ketosis is correct term) you will have them releasing in a flood.. Gonna see if I remember what a wise old Bari- friend told me
Puberty- but you usually don't get zits
Pregnancy- but you don't get a cute baby to cuddle
Menopause- but you know THAT eventually ends, this mppft You only wish it was over.
Me , 14 weeks post RnY, down over 110 pounds below my highest weight, but 80+ yet to go, less frequent but as another noxious chemical melts free I turn into Stormin' Norma, one good nerve left and fraying fast. Doesn't help that I haven't had as smooth recovery as most of my surgery date mates, they are on normal yet small portions and I am slogging on with ulcers, a stomal stenosis and a liquid diet. And I have a PICC line in my,upper left arm, am fed TPN solution 14 hours a day to up my Protein levels so insure ulcer healing. But still endevoring to be Ms Happy Camper in the midst, and some days it's Danged Hard. But I am a stubborn Red-headed broad who won't give up this or any other fight! Maybe I'm a Rocky Balboa Rockette!

@Frustr8 that's one thing that you and I don't have in common, I haven't yet experienced any excess emotions after surgery. I'm just so much happier than I was before, because I don't feel like I have to hide, and I don't feel like I'm out of place, no matter where I go. I feel like I fit in the world now. I don't know. This surgery is so strange in that it effects everyone so differently!

I felt emotional on day 2 while in the hospital but once I came home each day I felt better and better. I was sooooo happy and couldn't believe I had actually went through it. I'm still happy, don't get me wrong I do have frustrated days but I never let it last long and I did it for my health and it has improved drastically and for that reason alone I am happy with emotion. I'm still amazed how losing 41 lbs after surgery 48 total since I started the program could really improve my health so quickly.

You are going to feel great after it's over and you start healing and losing...It's a win win 👏

I go in the day before you and the nerves do ramp up the closer the date gets as with any important life changing event. I'm just trying to occupy my brain with other things so I don't obsess over it. Just remember, you are leaps and bounds above the people that say afterwards "I wish I had done it earlier".

I sometimes wish I had done it sooner so I could of enjoyed my early 20's more. I always felt trapped and insecure. But better late then never right?! I am trying to occupy myself as well since I also am still coping with my liquid diet as well leading up to the surgery. Thank you for your kind words once again and good luck on Monday my prayers will be with you!! 🤗

Wow! I guess everyone has different outcomes after a major procedure like this. I am sure we have all had our ups and downs and will have our ups and downs when it comes to pre-op patients like myself. I hope in the end you can look back and laugh at all the negatives and flourish with the positives of your outcome with the surgery. 110 pounds wow that is fantastic and inspirational! I hope I can return to you with the same results down the line someday!! 🤗🤗

Hey, my date is the 18th too! We can take this ride together.

I was nervous and indecisive a month ago. But once I got a date assigned, I sort of surrendered myself to the path I had started. Now I am getting excited. I'm just annoyed that there are things I need to finish up at work. I would rather be here learning and getting inspiration.

Best of luck to the both of us.

Yes I was apprehensive at first too before I officially got my date. But once I got my date and passed all my pre-surgery testing and started my liquid diet it all became so real to me like this is it! Its so cool we are going in the same day. I actually quit my job like 2 months ago which I had planned on doing anyway so I luckily have been able to focus more on my days leading up to surgery. I hope it works out for the both of us so we can start this happy and hopefully healthier journey! 🤗

I'm in week 4 post op and was having some anxiety before, thinking what am I doing with all the lead up and tests..you think you're going in for a heart transplant or something! This was much easier than both my gallbladder removal and the C section with my daughter.

I found the first few days post-op a bit rough..but I took it very easy, sipped on Water very slowly, took the pain meds as suggested and have had very little real pain or emotional swings...though I'm through menopause..maybe that's why? lol!

I'm finding, even only at 4 weeks, that I'm looking at things differently. I see the amount of food people put on their plates and I'm in awe as I can only consume about the size of an egg..maybe a little more now but not that much! I watch them eat and I'm amazed!

What annoys me right now is that I spend time getting my pureed chicken, carrots and sweet potato cooked and ready, eat my 2 tables spoons of the chicken (protein first remember!) and I can barely get a few bites each of my veg..! All that work and that's all I can consume! It's quite funny really.

So, the anxiety will pass, you will get through it and then things change on the other side and you'll wonder why all the lead up fuss!

Good luck!

I’m a bit over a year post op now. No regrets. Of course I was lucky in that I had no complications so that makes it a whole lot easier.

I have lost over 175 pounds and gone from wearing a size 28/30 and 4xl in clothing to a size 14 in pants and a large top. There just is no denying that how people treat you is different when you are not morbidly obese, and how you move in this world is so different too.

Best of luck to you and all others with their upcoming surgeries!

Oh Kids you are all going to do so good, I feel it in my bones. And my bones do feel a lot, been diagnosed arthritic since 25. Sorry I was such a Gloomy Gussie, guess I wanted to tell you the worst, that way when it turns out better you can say "Oh that old Frustr8, she was just blowing smoke! " because chances are, even though everyone's trip differs the vast majority get through with victories and few years.
Am I dream of making the gains KimTriesRNY has made, struggling to emulate at least parts of it. And since I live in this body, I don't always see the losses others can. Maybe I take myself for granted or I think I'm just dreaming the reductions, like I don't deserve this much joy. But I too will have my final victories, so I will stay the course no matter what! And if I can inspire while I perspire, Goody Bloody for us all!

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
