2 months out and I'm still exhausted

Recommended Posts

Tomorrow (Dec. 2nd) I will be two months post op and I'm still dealing with exhaustion. I get about 9 hours of sleep every night but still struggle to stay alert during the day. I just feel like I have no energy. Any advice, words of encouragement, stories that will give me hope? Also dealing with some post op depression which I'm sure isnt helping

Sorry you’re feeling so wiped out. My first couple of months I was very tired too. It took my body a while to recover from the surgery, which is pretty major! Don’t let those tiny incisions fool you!

Another factor is what you’re eating. I didn’t perk up until I could eat about 700 calories a day. Below that I was dragging. As for the depression, we are three weeks from the shortest day of the year. Everyone is a little low, even without major surgery.

I don’t have any magic advice but I’m betting you start feeling better soon.

Yeah, I forget about the whole major surgery part because it feels like a distant memory in my mind already. It's weird to think that my body could still be feeling the effects from the surgery itself.

On a "good day", I can make it up to 700 calories but I probably stay closer to 550 on most days. food no longer has any appeal to me. I'm pushing to stay on track with Protein though.
I normally get summertime depression so this whole having depression in the winter is a major bummer. I feel like I had maybe 3 good mental health weeks in September and that was it.

Thank you for your thoughts!

I'm 4 months out. I get on average 700-800 calories a day. Some days more most days closer to 700. I'm just starting to get energy back. I'm still in bed by 9:30-10. Which presurgery never happened. My concern is when I start exercising full out how am I going to get more in and keep energy up. I exercise 3x wk doing cardio. Want to do Zumba and weights but that's going to eat up alot of calories lol

How much Water are you getting in? Are you getting the 64 ounces daily? Something I noticed yesterday because I was on the go all day and wasn't prepared to be out and about all day, that I was quickly winded.. Not having the right amount of fuel for your day can also do that to you. I hope you get to feeling better soon. I am only 3 weeks and a few days post op. Will be a month on Saturday and 4 weeks on Thursday.. so I am still new at this.

I thought I was the only one. I had severe energy loss and was so tired for the first five months. it has only been the last month where I am feeling more like myself. I listen to my body daily. I rest more and allow myself to slow down. Even now at 6 months post-op I have to eat my Protein and be mindful to give my body the fuel it needs. I never used to take naps but now I take them whenever I can. Good luck!!!!!!

Yeah, I've been doing cardio at the gym and meeting with the personal trainer and it's been wiping me out but I even find myself tired on day I don't go to the gym??

Not enough water but I've been working on it. Unfortunately, only hot beverages seem to go down nicely and I hate tea. I've been stuck drinking the bariatric hot chocolate and warmed up water.

Not to sugar coat it, but you MUST consume an adequate amount of Water per day (64+ oz).

As well, do you have a history of anemia or hypothyroidism pre-surgery? You should talk to your PCP about what’s going on so you can get lab work done if indicated (e.g. ferritin, T3, T4, etc).

Nope, no history of anything pre op. My first rounds of tests aren't until January.
The water definitely may be what's bringing me down.

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
