On the road again, just can’t wait to get...

Recommended Posts

Hey everybody. I’m new here and I’m wondering if any of you out there make a living on the road? I’m a professional musician, and I’ve been touring constantly for the last 15 years. I had the LapBand surgery in 2008. I weighed 425lbs, and lost just over 100lbs. Since then however, I gained a lot of it back. :( in 2017, I weighed 380lbs again. I’m pretty sure it was me that failed the band, but either way, I finally made it back to my surgeon to discuss options earlier this year. I’ve been working hard and I’m down to 318. I’m ready to take a new step, and have made the decision, along with my surgeon, to move forward with a revision surgery schedule now for Dec 12th. I was approved by my insurance and all seems well....

However, I’m of course nervous. Giving my past failing with the band, road life, being sedentary for so many hours at a time.... I’m just wondering if anyone else is living out on the highway? Truck drivers, other musicians, etc. What do you do for excelsior? food? Any advice or tips?

My biggest concern and point of stress is, I return to touring Dec 27th. Right when I’m making a proposed transition from liquids to purées. I’m wondering how I’m going to manage that while touring. How to prepare for those two weeks I’ll be traveling, spending most my time in a bus, or hotel room.

I hope everyone is doing well today. Thank you for reading and thank you for your response. Looking forward to chatting with some of you. :) Cheers!

I am new to this myself, I find however carrying stuff with me at all times helps. I just moved to puree today. What about one of the hand blenders you can use while on the road. Meal prep when you stop at hotels, then use the blender to blend it. Though I am not sure if you have a microwave on your bus. If not, it will be a little difficult. But if not, you can blend while at the hotel and freeze while on the bus and then microwave. Since you will be eating 3 meals a day, you can have the evening one right before you go on stage or whatnot to accomodate your timing.

Not sure if any of this info helped, especially coming from a newbie, but i am pretty much a planner and am always looking for ways to accomplish tasks.

Also for exercise... You can see if they have a small stationary piece of equipment that you can work with on the bus if there is enough room or get videos that you can use to walk in place and get your exercise in that way since you will be traveling.

Good Luck!

I travel for business. Not non stop like touring, but weekly.

It's a lot harder than being at home. It's hard to make good choices, when you are faced with so many delicious, but poor choices. I'd suggest stocking up on healthy options and have them with you, Protein Shakes, Protein Bars, and as you progress, veggies, Jerky, cheese. But really it is about mindset and making good choices vs. bad. The surgery reducers our stomach capacity, but doesn't afect our cravings, at least in my case.

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
