How to get back on track

I recently had shoulder surgery so i have limited on what i can do to exercise. I have noticed that i have been feeling down and not eating the right foods. And have gained 11pounds. I need to know how i can get back on track and loss the weight?

My shoulder surgery cost me 25 lbs! I don’t know how to help you but please be proactive so this doesn’t happen to you! It’s tough getting back on track. Best of luck!!!

Short and to the point. Just do it. You know the diet you should be following... start following it.

Longer, you can start over. Start your pre-op diet over and follow it to the letter, pretend you never had the surgery. Fast the day of "surgery" and then start your post-op diet the way you would if you just had surgery. This gets you squarely back on track, has the added benefit of allowing your sleeve/pouch to "reset" a bit AND boost your weight loss.

Or, you can look into Intermittent Fasting. There are a few of us doing it on here and it's working very well. The science behind it is pretty sound too, might be worth looking into.

One reason we over eat eat is due to our emotions. What is the underlying factor that is making you feel down? Is it the surgery itself? Is it the fact that you gained weight? Once you can identify the what you can work on the why. The Why is your response to eat. Is there another outlet that you can use beside food? 11 pounds isn't too much to take off at this stage. Another poster had more than twice of your regain. Look deep and find the solution, it's there. Find out what is making you feel this way. Once you do that you can try to remedy it. But why is food your only option to get you through the tough times? After you find out then you can start to work on getting back to basics as far as eating. Good luck.

Congratulations on all your weight loss. Getting back on track can be done. It's does take the discipline you had at the beginning. It's the mental game of WLS. Stop beating yourself down for 11 pounds. You got this!

Getting back n track can feel like detoxing for a while. RIde it out. Go back to basics , follow your food plan, Log, be mindful of calories /macros, hydrate and move more. Try intermittent fasting as an option. Sounds like @Matt Z and others have a group going for support. Stay connected with others in weight loss mode. We all have our struggles to overcome.

  • Get temptation foods out of the house
  • go grocery shopping
  • Acknowledge when you feel down and want to eat. Find other ways to soothe emotions
  • keep healthy sweet and salty options to calm cravings
  • move/ activity. Many people that have bariatric surgery also have mobility issues. Exercise can be walking. Do what you can while you heal from your shoulder surgery.

I cannot stress enough what Matt Z. posted is spot on - there is no *TRICK* or MAGICAL thing to do but hard work! Even being so new out from surgery it is sort of clear you have not yet addressed your emotional issue-connection to eating with ie. stress and life. DO NOT THINK YOUR ALONE! I am 4 yrs out from surgery and regained due to a year of over stress and horrible things happening but I recently took self stock and got myself into psychotherapy to address what I was doing to myself both mentally and physically. Nothing is wrong with you, and nothing is wrong in asking for help! Call your surgeon/weight loss team! Tell them what your going through, ASK FOR THERAPY! Not just group therapy most ALL insurance converse some form of mental health. Get what you need and DESERVE! You deserve to be healthy, you deserve peace of mind, but remember our sleeves are TOOLS, they are NOT THE SOLE ANSWER., It is work, dedication and perseverance that will get you to the finish line. We all need to remember if we were food addicts prior to surgery we will ALWAYS BE A RECOVERING FOOD ADDICT. We need to keep ourselves in check, and it is the hardest fight one can endure! Alcoholics can stay away from places that serve or sell alcohol, same with a drug addict, but we as food addict must eat to live, and it will always be a trigger struggle. So long as you truly admit that to yourself and self check and correct and get help when you spiral, you WILL BE OK!

      I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
      I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.

      I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!
