Texture eater :(

Recommended Posts

Been trying some of the pureed foods stage.. i'm a texture eater so some of it literally makes me gag..pushing myself to keep testing them so i might have an idea of what to buy for post surgery. I know my taste buds will probably change but i need to be prepared as i wont have anyone to run to the store for me...so what are some of your favorites in the pureed stage thats not awful.

First off, my team said that many people couldn't tolerate the pureed stage and preferred to stay on whole liquids, which is perfectly all right.

Purees I liked: applesauce, mashed potatoes, cream of asparagus or broccoli Soup, cauliflower/cheese soup, baked potato soup. A lot of people like refried Beans. I didn't puree meats, really disliked the texture. However, very soft fish (I poached tilapia) smashed was fine for me.

Hope that helps.

IMHO I understand doing this--cuz I know I certainly did it to an extent--but it's overkill and unnecessary torture. LOL, only to find that it was all por nada. I didn't even have to do a puree stage. LOL. I never ate the jars of baby food. I just went from full liquids to mushies with a fork, to soft foods, to eating the kitchen sink. :)

Remember in purees, you can things like ricotta bake, roasted butternut squash and pumpkin, tuna fish and chicken salad smashed to kingdom come, refried Beans, creamed pureed Soups that aren't as viscous. Mix a spoon of Protein Powder in or keep drinking your liquids and bam baby!!

@FluffyChix Thanks! those are some good ideas!

@Orchids&Dragons yea i might just stay on liquids and on the Soup did you just blend it to a creamy consistency or drain off the veggies and stuff

I just chewed the hell out of it and when I was on full liquids, I just removed the bits with my spoon as i found them. there aren't many lol.

these were canned Soups. I think i had a total of 1 or 2 cans of Soup the entire time post op.

Blended it. It was nice to have a thicker consistency than full liquids.

It went well for me, but the trick is to thin it with broth or milk or whatever until it is at a thickness you can tolerate. Then gradually work your way up. But I could do soft mashed potatoes from the first day of purees.

Add some potato flakes to help thicken it up just a bit if need be. I did that with quite a few of my purees due to disgusting texture!

Taste buds can change... in odd ways. Mine were wonky for a bit, but have since returned to normal. The potato flake thing really did save me so much gagging!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
