Hair loss getting worse

Recommended Posts

I am almost 4 months since VSG and all of a sudden it seems my Hair loss is accelerating. I find it quite scary actually since I already have fine hair. I do the Biotin and special Shampoo and conditioner for hair loss but...….its not stopping it. Started to use a comb instead of a brush hoping it would help stop pulling out the hair. Sigh......

I have been stuck at 53 lbs weight loss and it aint going any further. Now I have to 'work' for it...…...can't be lazy anymore

Nothing you do at this point is going to stop or help the hair that's falling out. That's because your body decided months ago that it was going to stop feeding that hair that's falling out now. The reason it's falling out now, is because new hair is pushing the old hair out. Google Telogen Effluvium. It's when something shocks your system (stress, surgery, stressful surgery, etc) and your body has Hair growth cycles, the surgery causes a much higher percentage of hair to go dormant than normal. So, when the "Grow" cycle starts up again, all of that "Rest" cycle hair, gets dumped. It's just a temporary change to your normal shedding cycle. Nothing you can do about it now except deal with it until everything grows back in properly.

Same here, it sucks....waiting for the baby hairs to get longer. I do take Biotin, folic acid, and put peppermint oil in my leave-in conditioner - it was in a study that said it stimulated growth as well as rogaine. Hey who knows.

I just got my baby fine, thinning hair cut yesterday. I was waiting to have my extensions put bacon but there just wasn't enough left so...here it is...

Btw, 3-4 months is the big hair loss zone. You have a ton more hair than I had BEFORE I cut mine down to the "thickest" level (the new doo in the photo). The loss will stop and new hair will start filling in, so you can probably hang in there with the amount you have. As new hair grows in, just start taking a few inches u. You'll be golden!

Also, 53 lbs in 4 months is A LOT1 HELLOOOOO!!! YOU'RE DOING GREAT! Just stick with Protein first, drink your Water and make sure you are getting proper supplements. It will start coming off again. And stay active. The formula won't fail you. Only you can let yourself down.

Best wishes!

Your hair cut looks really great on you, suits you ❤️ I continue to loose a lot of hair and just have to go through it until it stops I would imagine a year into this

My hair did the same at 4 months. It seems to be coming back now at 6 months.

Ugh, I am at 10 1/2 months. Mine is also baby-fine. It is longer - I wear it similar to yours but have always had bangs of some sort. It only thinned somewhat in the 4-6 month range, but then really amped up. There are actually some bare spots here and there on the top near the back that I never noticed til using a hand mirror to check the back while coloring my roots last month. And then the top has thinned so much more - yet ridiculously my roots seem to be growing like crazy as they are constantly gray - even within like 2 weeks after coloring!! I do not get it. I take all the same precautions with the Vitamins and Biotin and even adding the essential peppermint oil as someone else mentioned. My Iron is on the low side, but I have been trying to amp up my intake of that & Protein in my diet as I continue to try different Iron supplements in search of one that does not bother my stomach. My Dr. is not convinced iron infusions are necessary at this point. In addition, not only is the thinning happening, but my hair in general just looks awful. Ends are splitting. Just looks so unhealthy. It's really driving me crazy! Hope it will be healthy again one of these days. Would love to hear any tips from any hair stylists who have had surgery themselves!!

I had my VSG done in April. I've noticed after I had kids, my hair thinned out a lot, so I was terrified of the known hairloss after surgery. I have 7 month old dreads, so I can't tell what Hair loss I have.

I didn't know this! Actually, this kinda makes me feel better. I've lost so much of my long, lovely locks! Enough that I had to have a plumber come out and unclog the drain! So sad....but hope for the regrowth is something to look forward too. I was a little worried I'd just have this stringy, sad, lion fish hair do for good. I can't bear to sheer it off, but man oh man, a breezy day makes me look like a crazy lady.

  • At the end of the day I would rather loose hair than remain obese ❤️ My hair continues to come out and my hair is getting thinner. I used the special shampoos and the spray thing that you massage into your scalp. I have noticed that since I started using the spray in scalp massager is it slightly better but still noticeable Hair loss. I am not sure if I can say this is all from the VSG though because I am peri menopausal soon to cross over to menopause. Hair loss is also a symptom of that

It is easier to lose hair and buy a wig , than to hide behind something so your size won't forever memorialized in pictures.😪

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
