Extreme anxiety about surgery at nighttime

Recommended Posts

My surgery is approaching fast (October 2nd). During the day, I am able to stay excited and positive about it but at night my mind starts to wander and I work myself up into an almost panic attack thinking about all the "what ifs?". I'm just looking for some words of encouragement/support or to connect with other people who feel the same.

I felt this exact same way before my surgery . I would think of the worst things and even reconsider if i should go through with it or not. Im now 12 days post op and I'm so glad I went through with it. I worked myself up about it so much and honestly it wasnt as bad as I thought it was going to be at all. Its definitely not easy and has its challenges of course but just know that you are going to be fine. You can do this and once you do you will be so glad you made this decision . so hang in there ! :)

This reminds me of going to Canada and seeing all the "A fed bear is a dead bear" signs. Well, I never saw a single bear, but the mosquitos nearly ate me alive! 😨 Where were all the 'Beware the mosquito" signs?

Similarly, the surgery seems like the painful part, but it's not really. The sign should read "Beware the wind and constipation!" And even that wears off after a bit. ☺

Keep your chin up. After a bit of a struggle, you'll give birth to a beautiful baby new you - totally worth it!

To highlight how absurd the "what if" game is, think about all the what if's you don't care about. What if you choke on your Breakfast? What if you trip and fall while brushing your teeth? What if a plane crashes into your house? What if your car explodes?

I mean, you can what if ANYTHING, even stuff that's just absurd. The what if's for going into surgery are just as absurd. You can't control any of it, you've got the most experienced people possible performing the surgery, in a hospital, so... if anything WAS to go wrong, you couldn't be in a better place for it to happen to you.

Anxiety and fear are normal. Don't worry about being worried.

Oooooohhhh!!! I love this game! What if you get to 140 lbs! What if you feel better than you ever have in your life! What if you look in the mirror and love what you see!! What if you finally try something crazy like sky diving or scuba diving or cave diving???? What if you never ever have diabetes, or hypertension or high cholesterol. Or!!! If you have some of those....What if they go away? Crazy!

BIG BIG HUGS!

It's super hard to curb the anxiety prior to surgery and after surgery you'll have all new anxieties! Yay! My own surgeon told me I could stop choking myself while he made his final preparations before I went to sleep. Apparently my hands were around my neck I was so scared. In reality I was so terrified I could hardly breathe! You'll probably be scared too. Everyone will tell you not to be including yourself. But hey, it is scary, right? You're taking a risk, but it's such a wonderful risk to take with such wonderful potential for a better life ahead. I say it's okay to be scared and to worry. You're going to lose some shut eye from time to time. Do everything you can to understand what worries you, try to focus on what excites you, and then be okay about being worried.

You are making a huge change in your life. If you weren’t a little scared that would be more concerning. This journey is so worth it but it is chaotic for some time. It’s perfectly natural to feel anxious but you are about to open a whole new world for yourself and it will be amazing.

Take a deep breath, try to still your mind, find ways to distract yourself, get out of the house, watch a good movie, visit with friends but don’t talk about the pending surgery, read a good book.

Be proud of yourself.

I had gastric bypass on 8/16. Carpel tunnel surgery on right hand on 8/30. Pain wise I'd do gastric bypass any day compared to my hand!! Still need to get surgery on left but with the pain of it not sure if I'm going to do it.

Hey, @Oct517! My surgery is the day after yours, and I'm in the same boat. (I mean, sometimes during the day it also stresses me out, but there are distractions and things I have to do... at night it's just me, my worries, and my arthritis pain, and the stress is higher.)

I don't have enough Xanax to get me through every night between now and the surgery (not by a long shot), but I have enough for a few key nights, like the night before. I'm considering trying a lavender tea + journaling ritual before bed, to get me through the other nights. (Chamomile would maybe be even better, if you aren't allergic to it.) I won't be in any less pain, but I will have gotten the worries out on paper so that I don't have to keep pondering them.

Anyway, you're not alone. And we're going to be OK! ❤️

Wow. This reply breathed life into me today. My surgery is tomorrow and I have been nearly panicked for about 24 hours now with a host of what ifs. Thanks for reminding me of the positive what ifs too.

I totally relate to this. I don't have a surgery date yet but am scheduling it this week and will most likely get sleeved in November. During the day I peruse Instagram before and afters and find myself feeling excited and inspired. I look at items in my closet that don't fit now and feel hopeful about wearing them again. I fantasize about being more physically active next summer -- more hiking, kayaking, stand up paddle boarding. But then at night, I become so scared and anxious. I have had nightmares about things going wrong in surgery and in the dream I'm dying and apologizing to my husband for leaving him alone with a two year old who won't have a mother. The disconnect between what I feel during the day and my subconscious anxiety at night is surreal. I am trying to meditate and seek reassurance where I can. I wish I could just have the surgery already so that I could stop feeling afraid and move into action. I appreciate this forum and your experiences. Reading your stories reminds me I am not alone.

This is 100% normal. I was the exact same way. I almost talked myself out of surgery. I mean, I lost 63 pounds pre-op. But I've lost 100+ pounds twice in the past. I can definitely lose weight but I need serious help keeping it off.

I was excited but really nervous. Now I'm excited and super happy I had it done. Like others, Just wish I'd had it done sooner!

Feeling scared and anxious is totally normal. I almost talked myself out of the surgery I was so scared but the kind people on these boards talked some sense into me and calmed me down. I was sleeved July 10th and am doing great. Best decision ever. You will have moments where you are afraid but move forward and think positive. The best is yet to come!

I felt the exact same way. I actually thought I was waiting for my death; like I was choosing to kill myself by doing this surgery. I had my surgery on August 17th. I just forced myself because I knew I had to because I hated myself. Once in the hospital, I felt so safe and calm. I kept telling my doctors I was scared, and they helped me. You will be fine!! This surgery is performed all the time! You’ll do great!!!

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
