3 Weeks Post-Op, How long until you can actually eat/drink?

Recommended Posts

Hi! So I'm 3 weeks post op (DS but Sleeve as far as this is concerned), going into the 4th week. I'm basically still on full liquids, since I can't comfortably drink more than 4-5 oz at a time, and can't really consume more than a few spoonfuls of thicker-liquids/purees.

At what point should I expect to be able to consume purees or thicker liquids in any reasonable quantity? I'm supposed to be able to move to solid foods at six weeks post-op, but at this rate, I don't see that happening.

Curious about this myself! I'm 8 days out, and just trying to think ahead. I fluctuate between "I could never eat again and be ok" and annoyance at the thought of liquids. :)

I will be two weeks post op on Friday. I see my surgeon on Thursday. I came home on full liquids and Thursday I will go to soft foods. I know its annoying because I could puke to drink another Protein Shake but using different frozen fruits I can get it down. You have to realize they have taken 80% of your stomach. It takes time to heal. That is the reason for the different changes in diet. Honestly I am hungry and I thought I would never be hungry again but that was a lie. I could eat someone's finger maybe even a toe at this point. When I do start to consume food I will make sure I will get enough Protein in so that I won't need any Protein Shakes.

Gah. Why is every surgeon so different?! Mine has forbid frozen fruit and smoothies even WITH Protein Shakes until month 2. So frustrating. I'm glad you're getting through it though! Today I really just didnt' drink anything. I used to drink a gallon of Water a day but in large quantities so just sipping is killing me. And my stomach is consistently grumbly....is that normal?

I'm the same as you. My doc says no full liquids until week 2 and absolutely no fruit. Apparently my stomach can't handle the acid. Can't wait until I can have a Protein shake!

@MusicalKate13 my program allows fruit in Protein Shakes as long as they are strained out through a fine mesh strainer. It is crazy how different our meal plans are. I used to drink Water like you. Sipping all day is so hard.

My surgery was Aug. 23 and today my stomach has started the grumbling and churning. Been wondering why.

@_Shane_ Per my plan, I start pureed and soft foods next week at just over 2 weeks after surgery. I think we just have to keep at it with little amounts and keep chugging along.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
