Am I the only bandster not losing?

I have to say that I am surprised when I see a post asking others what they can eat!

Since seeing a nutrtionist is usually a requirement, I find it hard to believe that this wasn't explained and handouts given.

I was given about an 8 page package of with each food stage, a list of suggested foods at each list, a shopping list, info about the papaya enzyme and Vitamins etc.

It's been helpful along the way, as I have referred back to it at each new stage/step.

It's not that I mind the questions and i have answered several people, I'm just surprised. Some are just looking for new ideas and that makes sense as we all want variety.

I just ordered a cookbook from Amazon.com with recipes for people who have had WLS. The author of the book had lapband surgery in 2003. The books title is Eating Well After Weight Loss Surgery Over 140 delicious, low-fat, high Protein recipes to enjoy in the weeks, months and years after surgery. The authors are Patt Levine and Michele Bontempo-Saray.

I just opened it last night and starting reading through it. She has instructions after each recipe to let you know if it is good for the liquid/pureed time frame or if it should wait until you can consume more normal foods. It also will let you know how to serve it to others who have not had lap band.

What a person can eat is largely YMMV! For instance Refried Beans early on sent me to the floor... my system didn't like them yet most people use them as a mainstay early on.

I had a meeting with a nutritionist required by my insurance, but she and I got into an argument until finally I just started nodding my head so she would sign the dang letter! (Long story) but each doc even varies on what they require...

My doc let me have coffee while in the hospital, and he gives back diet soda after the first 6 weeks........ some say you must give it up forever..... again YMMV..

Sometime the carbonation bubbles make me feel uncomfortable and drinking my once beloved dt. dr pepper is a waste of time.. but other times it goes right down....... ymmv.

I focus on Protein and cutting the carbs and calories come naturally because I actually forget to eat at times... ( it is weird) The band (for me) when doing its restriction job....... means that I rarely actually get hunger pains.... PURE BLISS.. a freedom from food that has never happened....... but wrapping your head around it is a whole different enchilada.

Oh and what I tell people..........

Since I'm eating 1/2-1 cup of food 3 times a day.. what I eat MUST BE QUALITY NOT CRAP........... protien/nutrient packed...

but know this I am not a perfect bandster.... ice cream goes right through and I've been known to eat a blizzard now and again..... (but I get a kids size instead of a Large)

my doctor did not require a nutritionist..i was supposed to go, but she was sick..so oh well. we had general rules, but the main rule was each person is different. the only thing his stresses is Protein, protein, protein..and no foods are off limits, although some he really doesn't like.

Shortgal - I agree - My doc gave me a whole binder - I had homework - etc - I see the nutristionst every time I see the doctor. I don't think all doctors prepare there patients and that's why there are so many questions on what to eat at what stage.

I'm getting very frustrated, too. I have had 2 fills and my next one is scheduled for Jan 2. I can eat almost anything and I never had much willpower to begin with. If I did I wouldn't be where I am now. I watch everytime I get a fill and it looks like I have good restriction but except for bread everything goes down smooth. I have lost 18lbs but I thought I would be further than this by now since I lost 12 before surgery. I am sad and thinking about doing one of those unheathly diets I use to do.

Just a question - it's kinda relative. :eek:

I was just banded on 12/13/07.. and on the morning of surgery, I was 248. About 1.5 weeks later, I weighed 236. In the past couple of days, though, my weight's gone back up where it lingers between 240-244.

Is it normal to have such variety of weight fluxuations at first? I'm a couple days into the pureed foods stage and I figured my body is just adjusting to everything, but it does discourage me a little. I'm hanging in there though!

Just wondering if anyone else had experiences similar to these?

(PS - No restriction yet. My surgeon is going to wait until mid/late January for my first fill once I'm through with the 2 weeks of eating solids again.)

I haven't been banded yet (Jan 2nd) but I have a friend of mine that was banded in Nov. She was supposed to go in last week for her first fill and they decided she didn't need it even though she feels like she could eat and eat! :hungry: They told her that her Proteins (chicken, fish) are still sticking so her restriction is fine. She just needs to be sure and eat these first and she won't be hungry. She said it is really working for her!

i am the lucky few that got restriction just from my band no fill i went for my first fill 8 weeks after surgery told my doc what i was expeiriencing he didnt even want to give me a fill but i wanted to at least try it he only gave me 1cc and it was great for about a week then hunger kicked in i got my apetite back have not lost any weight since my fill though i have lost 33 lbs total since oct 10th and i am happy with that im just wondering now how much to get in my band next which is on the 22nd of january so ya i hope i get restricion again!

      On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
      Soooo I am coming to a realization
      of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

        Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

        Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

        I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

        I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

        BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

      Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
