When your BMI is well below "normal" that's when it's too much. Just remember, the lower you start, the less you will lose overall. WLS is about potential percentages and not specific amounts.

https://www.obesitycoverage.com/weight-loss-surgeries/gastric-bypass/how-much-can-i-expect-to-lose

Looks like the average losses for a female of your height and weight are:
80% of people will hit 165lbs
50% will hit 150lbs
20% will hit 135lbs.
So, can you get to 120, sure. Is it common, not really. (based on "averages")

Keep in mind that BMI is a VERY flawed measurement.

https://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=106268439

It's a good general ballpark for the masses, but it can grossly misjudge individual body types.

To get the most accurate measurement to base a healthy weight goal on....you might consider body fat analysis. I did this, and found my body fat was in the healthy range at a much higher BMI because I carry significantly more muscle than average.

Also, setting a goal weight is a personal preference and can change. I've seen a lot of people start with one goal and end up having a second or third goal. It's up to you. Your body, your choice. If you can correct your health issues and are more comfortable a little heavier, so what?

I just reached my goal of getting under 28% body fat. I love my weight of 170 pounds and don't want to weigh any less...even though my BMI is incorrectly "overweight".

My next goal is to get under 24% body fat. Not intending to lose any more weight, though. Am working on adding muscle:) Muscle=awesome metabolism.

Best wishes!

@Harley66 we have the same surgery date. My height is 5’4”, I'm currently 256 pounds and my goal weight is 175. According to my BMI, I should be aiming for 130ish. I believe I should aim for the weight that'll make me happy.

And folks I'll weigh also. I am 5ft 8in , according to BMI AND former surgeon my goal should be 138 based also on body frame size. That ain't gonna happen, not even on a sunny day. My personal dream goal is 175/size15 Junior, I'm actually an overgrown Junior, a C cup, don't have the bustiness regular and woman/misses require. I would accept anything below 198, at 72 borderline anorexia isn't good for me, I am a presurgical 321, and before anyone asks I HAVE lost over 10% of my highest weight so I am trying as hard as people 1/2 my age, I just have the BMR of a 🐛slug on antidepressants, I still make my slime trail but it's about an inch an hour.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
