Hi everyone,

I am new to the forum. I am scheduled to have VGS on August 6th. I weigh about twice what I should and have high blood pressure. Insurance approved it and I am good to go--but I can't get over the fear of not waking up from the surgery, and the shame that I let my weight get to the point that I need medical intervention.

Has anyone else struggled with these emotions? If so, what can I do to overcome them?

Same date, same fear! I go at 9:30 and my fear of not waking up are horrible. I just keep thinking about a deep relaxing sleep and consider surgery as that. I'm praying everything goes well for us both. I'm sure it will.

I sincerely hope you can change to being proud of yourself for doing something that will change your life for the better, for the rest of your life. I can share with you that during my surgery, they had me hooked up to absolutely everything to keep me monitored for safety. Talk to your surgeon about this, i'm sure he/she can put your mind at ease. Once it's done, you'll be so happy you'll wonder what all of the fuss was about :)

There are so many factors that contribute to weight gain. Many you can’t control. Be kind to yourself. You are doing your best to tackle the weight. I had a RNY bipass 7/18. I was scared too. I asked myself if I had another disease would I not seek treatment?
In my opinion this surgery gives me a shot at a better quality and length of life.

Amen! Sister

Here's a couple more good ones.

Psalm 106:1 (KJV)
Praise ye the LORD. O give thanks unto the LORD; for he is good: for his mercy endureth for ever.

Psalm 18:2 (KJV)
The LORD is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer; my God, my strength, in whom I will trust; my buckler, and the horn of my salvation, and my high tower.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
