Scheduled for Lap Band - Success vs Regret?

Recommended Posts

Thanks @Jendkopp. I appreciate you sharing your story with me.

I know the band is just a tool. It is NOT a miracle. You still need to eat right (healthy choices, portion control) and exercise.

I guess no weight loss surgery is fool proof. I heard good and bad things about all the options.

i was in no way implying there would be bad food choices. the problem with the band is that it is sometimes difficult to eat the "good" foods b/c the bands may not allow you to eat them - certain good for you foods just get stuck and you have to eliminate them. others want restriction, but if you can feel tightness, you have too much. i think the band is highly misunderstood, which leads to so many complications. i am a highly compliant patient and still have had some major complications. i hope it works for you. i just believe in putting both the good and bad out there so you can make an informed decision :)

I appreciate that @Jendkopp.

I had the Roux-En-Y, so I can relate to stuff feeling "stuck". Heck, I used to throw up so much in the beginning I had to keep bags in my car just in case.

I know what you mean about good and bad foods. Its weird how post-surgery (Roux-En-Y) I could eat some things with no problem and other things I had an issue with, even going 100% along with what my doctor told me.

I know I have to rethink that way I see food, and I know it's going to be a learning process. I think I'm up for the challenge. I did it before with the Roux-En-Y and I was successful in keeping a lot of weight off for a long time. I'm sure I can do it again. :-)

As others have said, the band is no longer the "miracle tool" it was once thought to be.

In recent years it has been understood that 1/10 of bandsters will experience SEVERE complications and need it removed eventually (usually as an emergency surgery, which is scary). I am not talking about mild things like a slight slip, or some tightness and reflux... I am referring to erosion into the stomach, permanent damage to the esophagus (in the form of gastroparesis), phrenic nerve damage, vagus nerve damage...

It all comes down to this one question:

Do you want to be constantly worrying about this 10+ years down the line? Yes, this surgery is "reversible" and it's the least risky option at the OUTSET... but unlike with other WLS's the complication risk INCREASES the longer you are banded.

Also, I don't know what your insurance situation is, but remember that for the health of your band, you will need to constantly be seeing your doctor/getting fills/barium swallow tests, etc. - this can add up very quickly - and that's with NO complications.

It's been 6 years for me. I never reached my goal (20 lbs away) but I am a size 10-12 and happy so who gives a F. I never regretted it. Lap band is not a weight loss tool but a maintenance too. So, if you have been able to lose weight in the past but keeping it off is the problem then this is the surgery for you. No matter how much you want to binge after, how many slices of pizza you want to put away, you just CAN'T after 1.

Wow, I guess things have changed a whole lot. 6 years ago this was a surgery for weight LOSS and not weight MAINTENANCE.

In fact insurance wouldn't even approve it unless BMI was high enough, and most surgeons wouldn't install it unless the person had 60+ lbs to lose.

I have had my band for a year and a half now. It has been discouraging to come on to this website because I come here looking to share tips and advice with other bandsters and instead all you see are horror stories and people trying to dissuade others from getting the band. It's incredibly unhelpful and I wish that more of my fellow bandsters would come out of hiding to re-balance the conversation.

I won't sit here and tell you that my experience will be the same as your experience. I will tell you that my experience thus far has been overwhelmingly positive with the band. My weight has gone done, my energy levels have gone up, and I exercise vigorously at least four times a week. In fact, I play tennis tournaments and league matches with no issues. But most importantly, what procedure you chose to get is a decision best made between you and your doctor and not a bunch of strangers on a forum. My surgeon is still a big believer in the band. In fact, he has a band himself and has had his with no problems for many, many years.

During my first year and a half, I had tremendous success and lost 90 pounds. But at one year and seven months, I had to have repositioning surgery due to a Band slip. I was never able to get properly adjusted after that, so 4 years later, my surgeon recommended removal and conversion to Sleeve. I think it's important for people to know both the good and the bad so that they can make an informed decision. And perhaps the fact that people who have had the Band longer have more negative stories to tell may give some people pause to truly consider this very important decision. Do I regret my Band? Absolutely not! But Did the Band last as long as I expected it to last? Definitely not!

Jendkopp, understood. But consider this from the point of view of someone whose only option was the band. We all chose our procedures knowing the risks. I understand that people want to and need to share their experiences, but it is not helpful to flood those of us who have the band with horror stories. Perhaps there should be a dedicated forum for procedure revisions. But I don’t participate in this forum to be told that my choice is wrong and that I will fail eventually. I’m not saying that you personally have done that, but it has been my experience here. I come here to speak with other banders about their day to day with the band. This is supposed to be a support group.

I don't think anyone is saying that you'll fail eventually or that you made the wrong choice.
The OP asked a question and were all telling her our experience with the band.
She asked and we answered.

I understand what you're saying though--that this forum seems to be all band bashing... It sure feels that way sometimes! My doctor would always tell me to stop reading others stories on the internet and focus on ME and if I have any issues or concerns to speak to him directly. He also held support group meetings monthly for his patients.

I had. And done and loved it lost 100 pounds unfortunately it moved at 2 years and dearth with it for w long time then has it removed and did the sleeve. Doctor said he could go back in and secure it again but I thought if it moved first time why wouldn’t it move again! Agsin this is what happened to me all are different. If you are having great success that is awesome and don’t let anyone take that from you. You will always hear bad and good on the surgeries. Many fail at the band and instead of taking responsibility for it they cut it down. Do what your doc tells you and you will be fine. Who knows exactly why mine moved? Doc said heavy weight lighting I do, maybe it was when I was really sick and coughing for days. No one will ever know. What I do know I enjoy that 100 lb weight loss and I’m on my way yet again. I won’t give up

This is just one thread. A few months ago there was someone here who went out of her way to comment on any post she could find about the band so she could trash the procedure. There was someone who asked for advice on what to eat after a food trapping who got flooded with negative commentary about the band!

This is a very good point!

Every story is different and people come here having lap band meltdowns without giving the whole picture.

Were they banded properly? Did they have good follow up care? Did they follow their doctors instructions? Did they have the older problematic band put it?

There are many factors that can cause lap band complications, so please just realize that it's best to take these posts with a grain of salt and realize that their situation is not necessarily "proof" that "you made a mistake"

Yikes that is awful.
I remember a few years ago there was a lady spamming every post with awfulness. It stressed me out terribly, to be honest

By the way, you mentioned your surgeon has the band... I assume you used Dr. Fielding?

I hear amazing stories about him and his practice. I think his patients success rates are exponentially higher than average because he has such intimate firsthand knowledge of the band.

Even if your surgeon isn't Dr fielding, any surgeon who's had this procedure understands it better and therefore his patients have better outcomes.

In any event, don't worry at all!

Maybe reach out to some of the "old timers" on here and see if you guys can make a whatsapp group together so you can keep in touch without the negativity.

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I'm in Houston so kind of near you and had the sleeve in Dec. Down 61 lbs. Feeling better. Was definitely worth it. I hope the everything is going well for you. Update us when you can!

I am back home after my bypass surgery in Tiajuana. I'm post op day 4. Everything went great! I guess I'm one of the lucky ones who have not encountered much pain at all, no nausea thus far and I'm having no problem keeping down broths and water. Thank you for your well wishes. I cant wait to keep up this journey and have a chance at better health and simply better quality of life. I know there will be bumps in the road ahead, and everything won't be peaches and cream, but at least I have a great start so far. 😍

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

      2. Doughgurl

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!
