I missed all the drama but got here in time for saygrace's good news.

I wonder if they test men for STDs before surgery?

I get that you are trying to point out what you see as a double standard... but having WLS with an STD doesn’t put lives at risk in the same way. It just isn’t similar. No one is gonna sue them later for it either. And they don’t test women for STD’s pre op and we get them too.

I don’t know, I had a test done even before surgery in my ankle. But I’m also in my 30s. So maybe there’s a certain protocol based on age
Oh well I didn’t even include my wrist surgeries—three of them, two surgery centers, no test. But like I said my plastic surgeon ran one both times. So I think different places just had different policies. Because as you can see lots of older women had to have them too.

I was just reacting to your post that said definitely. I think very few things in this life are definite.

A somewhat related pet peeve of yours truly. If ONE MORE doctor's office asks me if I have had a hysterectomy, I WILL SCREAM!
Bariatric Surgeon- okay
Urologist/Nephrologist maybe okay
Even PCP that I can condone
But an Orthopaedic surgeon or an Otolaryntologist WTF do THEY have in mind? Maybe I had better not Hang Around and Find Out?😥💦😪

I wasn't trying to suggest that an STP is a man-only thing. I think I was venting because it seems that women are often singled out arbitrarily. Perhaps my comment was a bit misplaced and silly, but it was coming from a place of frustration. I've had far too many experiences in which I felt that I was treated differently and taken less seriously because of my gender. I meant no harm. My own personal demons.

Okay- so I had to take the test, too- even though I have an IUD and literally had my period the day of surgery.

But- it could be very catastrophic for you and the potential fetus if you were pregnant during surgery... so better safe than sorry. It’s peeing in a cup- which is a painless (for most) thing to do. It’s not like they’re doing a spinal tap to see if you’re pregnant.

haha very true! though they didn’t give me a pregnancy test the day of surgery, i had taken one a week prior at my preop testing

And @ Missouri-Lee's Summit we all do have, our personal demons. I have, been on Bariatric Pal. since last winter, I sure have shared some of my demons and failings, but there are more, deeply submerged ones only my psychiatrists and psychologists might might be able to reach, and some no one will ever know! Like an onion I have many layers and only a few have been peeled off.

My comment wasn’t really directed at you, but at the people who seemed miffed they were asked to take a pregnancy test.

I am glad things worked out for you! I think we’ll always find someone to stress over before surgery. For me, it was whether my EKG would be normal (I was convinced it wouldn’t) and then I was worried about not passing the nicotine test (I quit vaping in plenty of time)... so I always found something to panic over pre-op. 😂

Totally get it.... but I do believe this is one legit area of being treated differently.

My hospital did a pregnancy blood test just before surgery. Don’t know if it would show up this early but they do take that precaution.

"Totally get it.... but I do believe this is one legit area of being treated differently."

Hence, my reason for pointing out that my comment was silly. Sometimes we type faster than we think. In the back of my mind, I knew the reason and importance of a pregnancy test pre-surgery, but something got triggered in me when someone here mentioned that they were post-menopasual, had their tubes tied, or haven't had sex in years -- and yet these women were still required to take the test. Again, I understand the common sense of it all, but like everyone else, sometimes emotions make us say foolish things.

When I was being prepped for surgery I overheard some of the docs talking about getting pregnancy tests done for some the younger women also being prepped. Ask you Dr just in case.

I am no expert, but I've also heard that they give you a pregnancy test before the surgery, as it can be hazardous for the baby if he or she is there. Regarding other tests, I have no idea. Again, though, sex before surgery seems to be a bad idea either way. Better be prepared and focused on your health rather than satisfaction and pleasure. But, if you really feel like you need to relieve some stress, sex toys are always there for you. My favorite is this cock randy sean cody from lovermart.com, which I've been using for some time. But, all in all, you should always consult a doctor!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
