Eating is really uncomfortable

Recommended Posts

Re posting this to the general forum... hoping someone out there has experienced something similar.
Hi everyone! This is my first post and I’m feeling a little desperate.
I am 8 months post op with the gastric sleeve. ( Almost 100 pounds down!!!) As soon as I started eating solids in January I would get some discomfort and pressure in my chest. Sometimes it would even feel like the food was coming back up my throat. Not painful but uncomfortable.
It got slightly better but was still present at my six month post op appointment. The surgeon thought I might have some narrowing in my stomach, a stenosis, so he sent me to do a barium swallow. The radiologist didn’t see anything on the images but my surgeon thought he could see some narrowing. I did an EGD with balloon dilation a few weeks ago and my symptoms SLIGHTLY improved, but are still present.

All that background to ask... has anyone experienced something similar? How can I still be having symptoms after this! I am terrified it is all in my head. It’s not painful, but I don’t want to live with it for the rest of my life.

Does anyone else start to question their sanity after a while?

Just me? Thought so. 🙄

I believe we have had people on here that have needed more than one dilation.

It’s doubtful it’s just in your head.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
