Time off for surgery and recovery

Recommended Posts

I am having my surgery on a Thursday in August and won’t go back to work for a week and half.

I am not good at sitting around for days, I like to be busy. I’ve never had a big surgery. My surgery is outpatient.

My question is.. how many days am I going to feel pretty tired? Will I be able to sleep during all those days? I’m worried about going stir crazy and getting depressed during that week off. Hope that doesn’t sound stupid!

What type of surgery will you be having done? Depends on the job requirements you have. You can’t life for several weeks and you truly need rest to recouperate. I had the sleeve done on the 10th and I return to work on the 23rd. I am a registered nurse but work from home on the computer. Wanted to give myself enough time to rest and get into a good drinking pattern. Don’t be in a rush to get back. Listen to your body. Best wishes for a speedy recovery.

I had surgery on May 18th and was back at work by the 24th. The few days I did stay at home were driving me crazy, because I had thoughts of regret, was tired, and in a little pain. My job doesn't require heavy lifting, but I did get tired midday and take naps on my lunch break for the first week. Overall, going back helped me take my mind off the fact that I had surgery. It kept me busy. Just listen to your body.

I was pretty tired the first two weeks. Then after that it was a crap shoot day to day. I'd say by month two the "trauma" of surgery lost its effect on my energy level. I had surgery on a Wednesday and went back to work the following Monday. For me it was doable.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
