Forced malabsorption

Recommended Posts

This may be controversial but I'm wondering if anyone is purposely forcing malabsorption / laxative effect and as a side effect making their sleeve behave like RNY?

It occurred to me that from time to time I do this (to maintain bowel regularity) because dense Protein stays in my body too long so I purposely use extra stevia to promote swifter bowel movements on the days I eat mostly meat.

Any thoughts? Is this even a thing? Is this considered forcing malabsorption or just creating a laxative effect?

I wouldn't call it malabsorption, you are just creating a laxative effect (maybe not even laxative, but more what you would experience with fiber) Are you taking Fiber supplements daily?

No I can't have most because of ingredients, so just real whole food Fiber and it works great mist of the time but some days when I'm eating dense Protein there is no room for leafy greens I notice it stays in longer so I purposely force it out. That's what I called it forced malabsorption because I'm certain its not fully digested.

I understand, I'd still go more with using it for the Fiber effect... going to be the same level of absorption in my opinion, since you don't have any bypassed intestinal sections etc. And I doubt you'd see any negative effects of the process. I have tried to do what I was calling "Controlled dumping", using coffee or some higher fats/sugars to help move things along if I felt I as stalled or backed up. I take fiber daily as well though so I don't do that too often.

So, I don't personally see anything off/wrong/odd/controversial about ensuring your plumbing is flowing smoothly.

I'm following this - I don't eat dense Protein so I have no idea how long it might linger in my body. I sure don't want my Constipation to get any worse. Didn't know that Stevia can move things along.

For me it creates a laxative effect in high amounts, for you it may be another food

Reviving this thread.

As much as I like to believe I can eat meat (poultry) as much as I want, I can't. I have to force it out or it tries to sit inside me like forever.

Anyone else?

I’ve been having the same meat issue post-Montezuma. I’m drinking a cup of strong coffee every evening to get things moving. It’s been almost a week but things are equalizing.

Ive been using coffee this way since a month after surgery. I don’t drink more than about 14 oz per day so think it’s moderate. And effective!

Good to know I'm not alone!

Sorry Mexico was not kind to you...Hopefully (soon) you will be right as rain

Definitely on the mend, thanks! Just completely curious as to whether everyone would be having the same illness quirks as I'm experiencing, or if this is bariatric-specific. And if it's bariatric-specific, is this same routine going to play out (on a lesser scale, please) for other stomach bugs? It's very odd.

Anyway, coffee: the grand equalizer.

I wish coffee had ANY effect on me, besides warming agent, sigh.

I've noticed that I'm taking a lot longer to recover from any illness post surgery. A few others have noted the same.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.
