17 days post op; surgery was May 10.
ended up being dehydrated at 1 week post op check up & got an IV bag of fluids. No complications after that. Doc has me on 3 week liquid diet so I am still on that. Have 3 week post up in 3 days, after that I move to soft foods and I am sooo looking forward to some crabs. Living in Maryland and it is the season for crabs!
i am getting bored being home for this long but doc said it’s mandatory that RNY patients stay out of work for 3 weeks; hoping to go back June 4th. I am getting in more than 70 ounces of fluids but only about 40 grams of Protein only because it takes so long to drink the Protein Drinks & having to wait 30 minutes before and after.
Highest weight was 264 lbs.
Surgery weight was 242 lbs.
current weight is 229 lbs.

3 weeks doing liquid diet is a pretty long time. I think I would get a full blown head hunger attack if I had to wait that long. I can’t wait to have eggs and cheese lol

Nope. No alarms. I just carry Water with me wherever I go. I also wake up in middle of the night to pee, so before I go to bed i set up a few ounces of water in the fridge and drink those when i go to the bathroom.
I think it’s also because I don’t take baby sips but I sip. I no longer use the measuring cups but use an 8 ounce water bottle and drink from that.
I need more Protein for sure but working on it. The only RTD protein I can handle is Premier Protein clear which is only 20 G protein each so I am trying to get 3 in a day but so far only 2 is possible

I’m still doing really small sippy cups. Takes 3 sips to finish one cup and when I’m feeling impatient I can do 2 sips. Water feels so weird in my pouch that I’m trying to avoid having to drink it altogether. Today suddenly my Gatorade didn’t taste so bad lol so I’ve been drinking the G2 low calorie (orange) and that has been nice sipping. It only has 35 cal and 8 carbs per bottle. I’m going to have those until I run out of the 6 bottles I have from the hosp and then I’ll try the flavored protein water.. I think that will really help me get both my protein and water intake up. Do you get the sensation of fullness like you did before after lots of sipping? I haven’t felt hunger or fullness only tightness or a little voice in my head that says maybe that’s enough. It drives me crazy not feeling that ok I’m done sensation.

I'm not really hungry and I'm not sure about a full feeling yet. One day I made a chocolate Protein Shake and blended it with ice, mootopia and PB2 and it was so good that I think I drank too much. I kept burping up shake and it was a very uncomfortable feeling. I had to walk around for a bit to feel better. So I just measure 4 oz and that seems to keep me from feeling that way.

Yo-yo girl- that’s exactly what I’m trying to do today. It’s been easier. I’ve also fond that cooking for my family makes me feel better even though I can’t eat it. My daughter is dieting with me and is constantly supportive. Day by day... but it’s getting better!

It’s interesting that you say you can’t have more than 2-4tbs. What exactly do you feel? I haven’t felt full at all. I stop eating when I feel tightness or just a feeling I can’t explain, like it doesn’t feel right to have more but I’ve never felt like.. whew I’m stuffed, can’t get another sip in. That scares me because I might over do it or I might just consume much less than my pouch can hold, making my Water requirements even a long drag and Protein than it should be. I haven’t had any problems with nausea or vomiting, even when I crush my pills and add it to my soppy cup with Protein it goes down nicely no aftertaste. Tomorrow is day 7 for me and I can actually move to purée stage. I wonder if I can have avocado tuna and cheese or is that for a different stage and we require food that is more runny in consistency. I need to stop by my apt and get my paper work explaining all this, I’ve stayed over my mother’s house since surgery and I don’t want to leave [emoji23]

You have lost a ton of weight. I wasn’t required to lose anything during my 6 months and all I really did was eat all the food I loved, I even gained 9lbs during the process [emoji87] for sure I thought during the preop diet I was going to lose a good 8-10lbs but I cheated too much and ate protein.

Yo-Yo Girl from New York City :)

I’m not sure how to describe the feeling. It’s definitely not the old “boy I’m stuffed!” feeling like before surgery. It’s more like I realize that I’m just full. Like, if I eat one more bite, things are going to get ugly. There’s no tightness or chest pain. I used to get that too. It’s just a feeling of stop now. You’re done.
The hardest thing BY FAR for me is not drinking during or 30 minutes after a meal. The 30 minutes before I have no issue with. But not being able to have a small sip during or after is torture. And I never feel full from drinking btw.
I couldn’t try tuna or eggs or anything until the soft food stage. And when I first tried them it did not go over well. So I’ve backed up to one shake a day, 64 oz of Fluid a day, 12 oz of broth a day and then either potatoes or refried Beans at night. Tried to push myself too far too fast and got sick from it. I ONLY try new things when I’m home because I never know how it’s going to pan out.
I wasn’t required to lose the weight, but I was put on Victoza and I can tell you that definitely helped with dropping a lot of those lbs!
My biggest craving right now is a diet ginger ale!!! I wasn’t a huge soda drinker to begin with, but it’s hot here and whenever I see a soda, I just want to grab it! Lol. I know a lot of people are like, never drink soda again! Never use a straw again! Yada yada yada. But most of the girl’s in my surgeons office have had WLS done by him and they’re using straws and having an occasional soda or beer. I’m more of the moderation girl myself. I got the sleeve because i knew I’d have a little more leeway with that stuff.
How far out from your surgery are you? I got confused since they kept moving your date around.

Oh. And I’m back to being able to take regular drinks again after having to go to the ER for dehydration. I’m not sure if it’s the carafate or the protonix or just healing up after going back on Clear Liquids. I just finished my shake in about 10 minutes and feel fine.

May 22nd RNY for me, struggling with Water but the gas pain has completely disappeared and I’m feeling great! I’m a makeup artist and had a wedding to do on Saturday, that kind of knocked me out for a bit but I’m amazed by how well I’ve been doing. Just need to get more water in!

I had surgery on May 9th. My program had me move to 2oz of puréed food 6 times a day after I came home from the hospital. I have been eating hummus a lot, that seems to be very satisfying. I could finally have egg beaters with cheese a couple of days ago and it was delicious! Doing well with my incisions and pain. Im really pleased with my weight loss. I have been able to sleep without my hated CPAP and my husband says I don’t snore anymore.

I feel the same way.. I thought pain and serious discomfort will linger for a while but it’s like after the 2nd 3rd day you really feel better and better and better everyday. I didn’t experience any gas or incision soreness except for my muscle under my breast bone and even that only lasted like 2 days.

Wow No liquids only, you are lucky. I prob couldn’t do the 2oz that often. I will have broth or baby food in the morning and just sip Gatorade until nighttime. I need to get on a food schedule because I haven’t been getting my Protein like I should. It’s like if I get my protein my Water intake is bad or none and if I get lots of water I can’t do protein. I can’t find a balance.

My cpap is in auto and now it’s running on 6.5 which took me by surprise because it used to be on 9.5 and when I took a nap earlier in the living room everyone said I didn’t snore. I’m excited about that.

Did you have the sleeve or bypass?

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
