I found out yesterday that there's a script of ursodiol waiting for me at the pharmacy. No mention of it from my surgeon who i just saw yesterday morning. I looked it up and it's for preventing gall stones. Anyone else have to take this or something similar? I have a call in to him to find out the details.. no idea when i'm supposed to start taking it, how long etc. weird.

That was not on the list of medications that I took after surgery. You are taking the right approach - check with the doctor first.

It's possible that you don't need it. Lots of doctors/hospitals/surgical teams will write scripts generically for a surgery, but not everyone needs them all. If you have gallstones already, then this medicine won't help you at all. (And from what EVERYONE is saying, it tastes like crap). I've got stones and my doctor told me this was the one time that having stones was a benefit... because I didn't have to take that medication.

I was given a prescription of Ursodiol to take for the first 3 months post op to help prevent gallstones. Because you lose a good deal of weight in that time, it is just a preventative to help ensure no stones develop. But like others have said, it's always safest to verify with the Doctor.

I was given a six month prescription for it and was told to take it twice a day. It is to prevent gall stones.

Thanks everyone! I don't have stones currently - and the surgeon set the script. So I guess i'll pick it up tonight.

My doctor prescribed me this after surgery as well. He explained to me that after gastric surgery, the chances of gallstones go up exponentially and that it will help reduce the chances of it happening. If I recall, he said it's only for a few months or so, but he made it sound like it's pretty common to take. But he also admits to being very conservative in his treatments.

I was discharged today with ursodiol. I only have to take it for a few months to prevent gallstones. I decided to go ahead and take it. Better for me to be safe than sorry.

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!

Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!
