First meeting with the surgeon tomorrow!

Recommended Posts

Hi! I’m new here and only a couple months into my journey. So far I have been accepted into the local bariatric program, seen the psychologist and was approved, and now I’m meeting the surgeon for the first time tomorrow. Does anyone have any advice/insight/questions I should ask? I really have no idea how it’s going to go and what the steps after will be (most insurances require X amount of months dieting, mine does not). I’m nervous and excited!

The questions I asked are;

-what is the doctors goal weight for you

-how long does he/she expect you to lose the majority of your weight

-what the progression of diet is like after surgery

-will my catheter be removed in my room on unit or in recovery

-what will be used to lose the incisions? Staples, stictches, glue, combination etc.

-what pain medication will I be receiving while in hospital

-will I have a drain

-will I have a leak test/barium swallow test (some do the test while you’re still under)

-how long will I have to wait to have ice chips/fluids

-how long does the procedure approximately take (this was more for my husband whom was waiting & nervous lol)

What do you do for after-hours and weekend coverage? I have of posters who were told to go to nearest ED, up to people with a 24 hour coverage by original doctor.
At what intervals do,you schedule post surgical appointments?
Will I have a post surgical weight restriction and if so, for how long?
Are there any reason you will refuse to complete my surgery?

For me it was important to know how many total surgeries he's performed and how many he does weekly.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
