1wk Post Op- First Complication

Recommended Posts

So my recovery has kind of been a dream. I am exactly 1 week out, and consuming over 100oz of fluids, and 80-90g of Protein. Feeling great, pain is pretty much gone. So all in all, I really can't complain. EXCEPT I am apparently allergic to dermabond and my entire belly has broken out into an itchy-as-fu** rash! I am going CRAZY! Thankfully my surgeon said I could hope into a hot shower and peel off the rest of the dermabond but it will probably take a week or two for the rash to go away. I know its not really a complication... but guys I literally have 0 willpower when it comes to not-itching. I'm one of those people that every mosquito bite WILL become a cut because I itch and itch and itch! SO ITCHY!!!!!

On another note I was super excited to go to "soft" foods... but a lot of negative reactions from other members freaked me out and I chickened out. However I have been making my own shakes instead of doing the RTD ones. SO much better. Those of you struggling through the liquid phase, try making your own. I made a delicious red velvet flavored one that has 37g of protein that is delicious!

Can you take benadryl? It may help.

Not particularly comfortable, but ice packs for 10-15 minutes at a time might help with the inflammation, too.

I was really itchy after surgery too. And my skin was really dry and peeling when it finally came off.

As for the diet upgrade, just take it slow. Your body will tell you what you can handle. I was nervous at first too. Start off with simple things like Greek yogurt, cottage cheese, thinned refried Beans, and thinned oatmeal.

My rash exploded overnight and expands my entire tummy and sides [emoji24]. Sooo itchy! Taking Benadryl and using cortisone cream.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
