Weight gain over night

Recommended Posts

So yesterday wasn’t a great for me as far as following my diet. I weighed myself yesterday morning at 309.2 and this morning, the same scale, is reading 315-317!!!!!!!! I am not proud but yesterday I did eat more often than I should have. I had egg salad(without bread))for a snack and I usually do not snack. I also had part of a sno cone which did have sugar. I’m just unsure how there was such a dramatic increase in weight.

TMI, But I will also add I have used the bathroom.

I know you shouldn’t weigh everyday but I have never “gained” so much in one day even before surgery. I could go to a buffet and still not gain so much!

A pound is 3500 calories, so i think your scale is off. You would have to chow down alot to gain that much over night...dont drive ur self crazy, weigh again on another day, or another scale

Maybe you're just retaining fluids.

My MD put me on diuretics a couple of months after surgery, and I lost 18lbs in two weeks (& it hasn't come back). He told me to expect to lose 5lbs.

We must be kindred spirits. I'm on lasix now. They're hoping I'll go down around 30 pounds, total. Glad it worked for you!

That stuff is fantastic. They seem to hit about 45 minutes after I take them. I must make 4-5 trips to the bathroom, but then I'm back to normal for the rest of the day. Are you' taking potassium tabs too? The two two should be taken together, or so I'm told.

So question on the diuretics...I thought those were a no no bc of possible dehydration...thus the reason Water has been etched in our brains...

It becomes a "lesser of 2 evils" thing. In my case, the cardiologist thinks there is Fluid around my lungs and it needs to be reduced. The surgeon said the diuretics are fine so long as I continue to drink plenty of liquid, which has never been an issue for me.

The other diuretic I'm on has potassium in it. So, I'm good.

Speaking of the 45 minute thing - The doctor injected the lasix directly into my vein because the oral meds weren't having enough of an effect. Then I drove to work. About 20 minutes after the injection, I ended up in the mother of all traffic jams. I was praying "Please, God, just let me make it to the next exit. Don't make me pee in the middle lane of the interstate!" God was kind and I made it to the next exit and there was even a gas station there! I could hardly walk in, in needed to pee so bad!

So, has it gone back down?

So I weighed in this morning at 311, still up but not as high.
I understand it wouldn’t stay I just didn’t realize such an insignificant change in diet for one day would cause a change like that on the scale

Yeah! Head my warning! Generally I have been following my diet really well and intend to. Maybe I’m having hormonal fluctuations or something as well, who knows! 🤷‍♀️

Also I weighed my daughter to check the scale and it was registering for her as normal so I don’t think the scale was the problem.

Are you moving your scale by chance? Newer scales can become un-calibrated if they are moved/lifted. And it can take around 5 consecutive weigh-ins for it to re-calibrate itself. Does your scale also do body fat? I've been weighing myself daily, and some days I gain weight, but body fat either doesn't change or lowers. So (for me) as long as one of the 2 numbers is decreasing, I don't stress about it. This was 20 hours ago now, how are you doing today?

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
