Getting the Sleeve with a 35-37 BMI?

Recommended Posts

Has anyone gotten the sleeve with a 35-37 BMI? I went to the doctor today to discuss the gastric balloon and he recommended the sleeve. My BMI is 36. I’m 5’2 and 199 pounds. He said that the sleeve would help me loose 40-60 lbs. I’m scared that I may exceed that amount.

In my experience, my program/surgeon is very conservative. He did not try to "SELL" me on anything. He laid out my options and what would work best for my body shape and health history. What I will say is that my surgeon no longer does balloons nor bands. They are more prone to leaks, risks, adjustments and lower weight loss. It is a short term fix. They have the sleeve somewhat down to an art form.

Yea my surgeon said he could easily give me the balloon but that based on my struggle with weight loss and body he recommends the sleeve! He said it has less complications.

I did find that part strange. I would think that the balloon would not be as invasive and therefore would have less complications??? I had heard of band leaks and adjustments, but i haven't heard that about the balloon. I would trust my surgeon- unless you feel like he is trying to sell you something.

My BMI was 33 when I went to Mexico and got the sleeve on April 27. I had the lap band for about 7 years and I wish I had just gone with the sleeve the first time around! If I were you - I’d just go ahead and get the sleeve... I mean if weight is an issue and yo-yo dieting is part of your life, get the sleeve and take care of it! (5’5 was 195 at time of surgery and 41 years old)

I’m projected to lose about 60. I’m 199. So I’m excited!

I had my sleeve done 4/15/17. I was 35.6 BMI 5'2" and 200.5 lbs. I lost a total of 85.5 lbs and I am at my goal of 115lbs. Just went to my Dr appointment and he stated he will keep a eye on me that I don't drop to much more.

Hi Gully,

My BMI was just over 35 at my initial appt. It was lower than 35 on the day of surgery. The weight isn’t falling off quite as fast as others, but it’s all good.

You may or may not but if food is your addiction getting sleeved will most likely do more good than harm.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!
