Kids are mercenary - get them where it hurts!

When I was in my 'too young to get a real job so I was the babysitter for the neighborhood' years, I was asked to look after two 'devil-spawn' boys...they were mouthy, bratty children who lied about everything, stole from parents, from visitors...it would be difficult to find something positive to say about them. Babysitting them was a real challenge (I was 14/15yo at the time, and they were 8/10). However it was with them that I perfected the 'mean what you say and hold firm' stance...one their parents never learned! One Sat night before agreeing to babysit, I told the parents I had had enough; it was time for new rules while I was in charge. I told them what I was going to do, and they agreed (they really wanted to get out that night I guess). So, when I went into the house that night, and in front of the parents, told them for every act of disobedience or rudeness, one possession of MY choosing was going to be taken and given to Goodwill...no second chances, no negotiation, no trades, no giving them back later etc. I outlined the core tenants of respectful behavor (if it isn't yours, don't touch; yelling is not allowed, etc). They didn't believe me...it only took half a dozen items to be taken before they changed. And they did NOT get the stuff back; they were NOT just put aside. I took them home with me, and donated them as I had said. They HATED me that night (and the language was enough to stand my hair on end - which of course meant another item taken), but oddly enough I never had a problem with them after.

I don't care about controversy or public opinion. They are NOT adults, and as such, are not afforded the same privacy that adults are. They are our responsibility, but society tries to hold us accountable for what they do yet tie our hands in how to do it. This mama never played that game.

I would do backpack checks, room checks, checking in with teachers, etc. She was not allowed on the internet in my house except for school, and in the end I found out she was accessing it at friends' houses. One mother even came to me with a bill where our daughters had gotten those "free" cd's in the mail for so many minutes of internet use, but once the time is up it charges to your phone bill. She tried to tell me I owed a couple hundred dollars for that and I said sorry, not my problem. My daughter isn't allowed on the internet in my home. If you aren't watching what they are doing in yours, it's certainly not my problem.

I agree with you 100% I just was trying to avoid the attacks I might get lol.

Hehe, I know. I just never cared. :tt2:

I would tell DD, I birthed you, I raised you, I pay for you, I'm not having the government or anybody else telling me how to handle you.

Now we just need PATTYs opinion.

Nooo!! You can't say that name in here... unless you turn off the light and light some candles in the Bathroom. Then you say it three times in the mirror.

Somehow I haven't managed to tick her off yet. I hear it's quite entertaining.

Kat, your youngest sounds a lot like my DD. Actually, I think DD is a little bit your youngest, and now turning into a little bit of your oldest! :tt2:

I've tried to take her "stuff" away and she just shrugs and goes, "Okay." Nothing got to her...Until last month she lost her phone privelage and she actually cried. She's not BAD, just becoming more aloof and sometimes too sassy for her own good.

I love the idea of the keystroke thing...where do I get one?

A couple months ago, she was crying in her room and she texted me asking if she could talk to me. (snort - texting me from the fricken bedroom...)

But, she had taken the computer while I wasn't there and looked up sex. And, of course, when you do that all kinds of porn pictures and pop-ups happen. I was stupidly naive thinking I didn't need the parental guards.

She was crying and shaking and said she broke the computer because instead of coming to me, she decided to delete her user account. But, she's not an admin, so she could only delete part of it and all her iTunes got wiped out. (ha ha ha...)

So, we talked about sex and I put in the rules for the computer, and the parental guides (which irritate me because it slows my computer down!)

I'm not going back through the whole thing to find the original post on this topic. Just thought I would share what my mom always told me growing up. She would tell me "I don't care how tall/big you get. You'll never be too big for me to step on a chair to knock you down."

I stopped growing taller at 16 @ 6' 3". I graduated hs @ 250. I believed her every time she said it. And she is only 5'6".:)

I had a friend in high school that, eye-to-eye was a little shorter than I am and I'm 5'5"....but for every "how tall are you" question, she'd put 5'6". To this day she still puts that (you know those emails that go around...she still putting that.)

I'm not sure why that always bothered me...it's only one inch - but dang it! She wasn't 5'6".

Oh how I can relate to this...my mom was 5'4" on a tall day, and regularly told my brother (at 6'1"), my nephew (6'0") and me (5'11") that she would cold-cock any of us that gave her lip.

She intimidated my hubby - he's 6'3", 300lbs, and a powerlifter - and he didn't give her any lip either! :)

Now me, I LIKE tall guys too (example 1 - my DH)...:):lol:

Let's see if I can do this from memory.

I have parental controls on the computer (got them before DS even started using the computer). I have all chat blocked. I have parental controls on the cell phone (thank you at&t).

My mom isn't 5ft (even though she has claimed it for years), but she always had my respectful fear of her. I think because I had heard all of the stories of my grandmother (taking a broom to them) that I figured my mom already had all of the good ideas for beating me. I didn't want to chance it. Our biggest problem was she didn't talk to me about sex (something else she learned from her mother). I had to learn that one on my own. Needless to say, she was not happy with that. I have already had some talks with DS (he is 11 already starting puberty). I have been talking to him on a level that I felt he could understand since he was old enough to ask about the differences in moms and dads. He gets very embarrassed when we have those talks.

I :) tall guys. I am 5ft 1.5 (on a good day:blush:). DH is somewhere between 6ft3 and 6ft4. I have always gone for the guys that I almost have to stand on a stool to kiss.:tt2:

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!
