Peripheral Neuropathy

Recommended Posts

Call your surgical team and get your Vitamin levels checked out. Low B Vitamins can do this. It's pretty critical, especially if it's a low B1 (very common in WLS pts) to get it dx'd and remedied. Can be permanent damage.

Called them to notify but on second thought I realized they are not the best to deal with it, they are just surgeons, I'm going to visit my friendly neighborhood hematologist [emoji23]

I developed pretty significant peripheral neuropathy after I developed Diabetic Ketoacidosis. My blood sugar was in 900's by the time the doctor discovered the problem. I was almost in a coma. I developed the neuropathy as a result of this. Pre surgery I took Gabapentin for the nerve pain. I was on a pretty high dose, 600 mg X 3 per day. After surgery, the nurse was crushing my pills and I couldn't get the Gabapentin to go down without gaging or throwing up. So I stopped taking it for the 6 weeks that I couldn't swallow pills. Then I just never went back. Honestly, I don't see much of a difference with or without the medication. Maybe my tolerance had built and it wasn't effective anymore.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
