so confused about food...

Recommended Posts

OK, Im a little over 4 weeks post op Im down around 40 lbs, lost more inches than weight which is good. My issues are food.. i.e. am I supposed to be hungry? am I supposed to feel as I eat to know if Im full, currently if I get any feeling its pain and I know Ive ate too much.. I had one stuck/puking episode and I never want to eat again ;) I would be happy never eating again but damn I run out of energy... currently I can eat mashed potatoes, pop corn chicken, turkey sausage, real good pizzas (dough is made from chicken, google them) Im frustrated because one one hand I dont want to eat but the lack of energy sucks.. one the other I need to find better food choices but Im (after my puking episode) too chicken to try new things... I see others eating pastas and things they said would swell and to avoid so this adds to my confusion.. my biggest fear is eating too much and stretching out my new stomach.. I go to the gym 4 days a week, do Protein Water every day and trying to get in my 64 oz of H2O... seems like a full time job just doing this... help!

Gosh I feel your pain! I'm right there with you too. Still trying to figure it all out. I'm 6 weeks.

The biggest thing for me is that I'm following my surgeon's and RD's plan and not eating something just cuz others are eating it.

The most frustrating part of all has been determining what quantity (volume or by weight) you should be having at each week of progression.

My RD finally broke down and said 1/2c volume made up of about 1.5-2oz of Protein and .5-1oz of veg. And if there's room left, then to have some low glycemic fruit (bite or two small). Also, at first I was doing soft foods and am now cleared for everything. You may still be on softies? If so, just cook the hell out of your veggies and eat moist protein sources.

But I've not risked it by adding the fruit. I do include some slider veg like a grape Tomato and 1/3oz of avocado with dinner and seem to tolerate it.

You have to make yourself try new foods. Go slow. Stick to known foods that are ok--and only add new ones every couple of days.

Sorry you puked. But Welcome to the boards!

Great...you wanna share what your nutritionist added for you?

Also, great job getting to gym👍🏼

I find easy fast Protein to be yogurt, cheese, shrimp (keep frozen and take a couple out, thaws in Water quickly), hard boiled eggs, deli meat, and I made mini egg casseroles in mini muffin pans, froze and microwave 2 for quick snack.

I haven’t gotten sick...I really chew, wait between bites, and time myself to make sure I’m eating slowly.

Best piece of advice!! I am blown away by some of things people say they are trying/eating.

I'm almost 6 weeks out and just recently was released to pureed & soft foods. My doctor had me on liquids for 4 straight weeks. That was brutal. I completely understand your feelings because my biggest fear throughout all this is vomiting and getting food stuck. I didn't want to eat at first and was overly cautious. I'm discovering now that as long as I take very small bites and chew thoroughly I'm fine and actually enjoy eating. I ate a little too much refried Beans one day and that made be a little nauseous but that's about it. I know eating certain amounts of Proteins vs carbs vs fats is important, but I don't get hung up on the numbers. I know I'm not eating like I used to and the weight is coming off quickly and I feel good.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

So proud of you Cat. Getting into those smaller size clothes is half the fun isn't it?. Keep up the good work!!!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

I may have to have gall bladder surgery during my weight loss surgery. Not thrilled about it either but do not want 2 recovery times. Just want it over with.

Thanks for your post. I may need to rethink my decision... :(
