I am in the pre op testing phase wondering how long recovery is for the gastric sleeve and how long it took you guys to feel normal. I have a 10 month old daughter and work as a nursing assistant at a hospital so I want to estimate how much help I will need and how much time of work.

I would say give yourself 4-6 weeks. You probably, will feel froggy before that but I did your job 25 years. You have a fair amount of lifting and transfers and a good chance of having your tummy bumped at work. Make sure your incisions are no longer sore before you go back full time. I [emoji173] my patients, nurses hmm administration meh. There are times that i still miss it!

Due to your line of work. You may need about 4 - 6 weeks. Surgeons usually do not suggest lifting anything heavy prior to that time and to gradually get your stamina and muscle strength back up after surgery.

Also, you have a small child and that will require a lot of binding over and lifting. I would suggest staying away from work for the 4 - 6 weeks because you cannot stay away from being a mom.

For myself - I was so tired the first month (from so little nutrition) there was no way I would have been any good at an outside job. I had an easy recovery, no pain after 2 days and was up and about.

And since we are all individuals there is the unknown about your body's reaction to major surgery or your tolerance for the food and liquid stages, so it is better to take 6 weeks and go back early than to take two weeks and pass out from dehydration and exhaustion. Good luck.

So I'm a single woman who lives with roommates and my family is all in another state. My mom will fly in to come stay with me after the surgery, but how long will I need her with me? Anyone have opinions?

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
