5 Days Post Op

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone. I hope everyone is having a good week. Monday, the 19th I had my gastric sleeve procedure. I thought I would share my experience thus far in case anyone has questions or if I have any questions.

The surgeon was right on time, very encouraging and answered all my questions that I thought of last minute. The anesthesiologist as well was awesome. I was a little nervous going into the operating room but it turns out it was freezing.

I woke up in recovery in pain, it was all over, my abdomen chest shoulders etc. The one thing that was good that I didn't experience any nausea whatsoever. The took care of that with medications so no dry heaving. The hospital was really full so I stayed in recovery for about 7 hours. I was also informed that I had a hiatal hernia that they took care of. After I finally made it to my room. They gave me these lip swabs to make my mouth moist. I then urinated for the first time. I then was in and out of it due to the pain medication. Things went well with me walking around and starting to drink 4 ounces an hour. The next day I was discharged.

It wasn't until day 3 at home that I started releasing the gas. The poor dog ran for cover. But walking around and taking gas x really did the trick. Today is day five and I had my first post surgical BM. I am still struggling to drink 4 ounces an hour. I am doing my best. No more gas pain, just some pain around the abdominal area like I did 5000 crunches.

Thank you ! I also forgot to mention that I used to snore like a tank but was never diagnosed with sleep apnea. Now according to those around me I don't snore at all. Weird.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Your so close now! It's gonna be great :) Wishing you a speedy recovery and looking forward to seeing how it goes!

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
