New here & 1 week post-op with a bit of a freak out

Recommended Posts

Hi! So I am new. I had the sleeve done March 6th so I had my 1 week post-op appointment today. I was down 16 pounds. My start weight when I began this process (which involved 6 months of pretending to do Weight Watchers to get insurance approval) was 514. I lost 14 pounds over seven months having changed nothing. But I was already in eating disorder therapy for a decade and worked on Intuitive Eating and had stopped dieting in 2007 (this is why I was only pretending to do WW, which my doctors were aware of and fine with, because dieting is a massive ED trigger for me and it's also utterly pointless because it does nothing for me). Anyway, I had to fight the voice in my head saying, wait with everything I just went through in the past 10 days I've only lost 16 pounds? That doesn't seem like very much.

I understand this is irrational. I truly do. BUT... what I also realized is, I have NO clear idea of what to expect from this surgery in terms of weight loss in week one... I have a general idea over the course of six months to a year of what's considered average or common, but I don't know if 16 pounds might be a stellar first week... or if it's kinda crappy.

So... what do you guys think?

My most major fear going into this was that I was changing my life irrevocably and it wouldn't work. Dieting never has, and so I've always feared this wouldn't, either.

Thanks in advance. Also, please be gentle with me... I know I'm overreacting and that one week is not enough evidence to suggest this won't work, even IF it was a crappy weight loss for a first week post sleeve.

If the numbers continue to upset me, I plan to stop knowing them (and my doctors are all okay with this, too). I'm not aiming to be thin from this surgery. I'm hoping to get to about 350... and I'll be satisfied. I am not a typical WLS patient in pretty much any respect.

I don't honestly know if this forum will be a good place for me, since I am easily triggered and need to avoid that. But tonight I decided to create an account and see how it goes.

Thanks for reading. <3

Don't freak out. And I think your instinct to stop looking at the numbers is probably a good one - if you can, get a smart scale and deprioritize the whole thing. Just step on it on the mornings you remember to, and don't care about the number. Then you can check the data once a week at a time when you're mentally ready for it.

I'm a day before you, March 5th, and have lost 10lbs. I started at just shy of 300. So proportionally, I'd say you're tracking right along with me. And I'm not freaking out, so neither should you. It's way more important to pay attention to food and how you feel when you're eating it - both how you physically feel (restriction) and how you emotionally feel (head hunger). Don't burn time or energy on scale-watching.

Definitely don't freak out. Some people actually show a weight gain the first week because of the gas and fluids from the surgery. It's basically too early to know much of anything in terms of what to expect. For what it's worth, my surgeon told me not to pay any attention to my weight/loss, just focus on getting enough Protein and Water and taking my Vitamins and doing exercise (my knees are pretty bad, so I don't do much in the way of exercise). Of course I weigh myself and keep track of my loss, but please be aware that this is a long haul--there will be (frustrating) stalls along the way, when you won't lose despite the fact that you are eating what seem to be very tiny calorie counts. Don't worry about the stalls, either--your body will catch up and you'll start showing losses again.

Hang in there. So far, you're doing great!

You’re doing fine at 16 pounds! You really shouldn’t worry about what you lose so early on. It should be at least 2 to 3 months before you even worry about it. I called my dietitian twice already with concerns & he told me not to weigh myself or be concerned at this point. Right now just focus on following your recovery plan. Your doing great!

Thanks everyone... and just to clarify I will only get weighed at the doctor's office. I won't allow a scale in my home. And I go at 3 and 6 weeks and then I think it's like once a month so I won't have to deal with the weekly numbers and I hope that will help.

What will help- is your clothes getting bigger as you get smaller. And maybe new pants, I look forward to getting back into jeans. So often when you're at the upper end in ladies the slacks are boxer waist and the colors are plug -ugly, the tops are poorly cut. I want to get small enough I can wear levis and nice graphic tees that aren't always guy ones. &,want to,look blob-less in them. I guess I want to look like a girl again instead,of just BIG. Maybe that sounds vain. And Lord Forgive me but I want a bona fide wolf whistle instead of thinking the guy sprung a leak like a deflating balloon.

@Max Caulfield you may be triggered excessively by asking for opinions on a forum, as none of us are experts, we are all just 'participants' just like yourself. I have no personal experience with ED so my advice would be secondhand knowledge at best, which I will refrain from using. I will however say this - you are brave, continue to be brave, continue your therapy and listen to those experts, and I wish you the best outcome for you.

I think you will find that you've set a goal that you will breeze by. Also, there is no "typical" bariatric surgery patient. Each and every person is unique with unique circumstances that have brought them to the journey. I highly recommend that you watch this YouTube video. It will show just how much weight is a very individual problem

The surgery changes more than just your stomach size. It causes biochemical changes that work a little differently for each and every person. The key thing is patience and perseverance. Follow the program religiously, track your intake, and exercise. Let things happen as they're happening. 16 pounds after 1 week is a lot when you consider the average weight loss through diet and exercise alone is only 1.5 - 2 pounds a week. So you just about blasted through that average!

I am new to the weight loser's bench myself and the biochemical changes that I spoke of have already started happening. I began being aware of them when I began my first few walks around the hospital. My first walk was around dinner time on the floor so there were all kinds of smells. For the first time in my life, the smells were only pleasant and did not trigger a desire to eat. I was merely content to enjoy the smells and keep moving. I noticed that I had not only lost the feeling of hunger, but for once in my life, felt very neutral about food.

I think you are doing outstandingly. Congrats. If it were me, I'd use your therapist and RD as touchstones--also your doc. Cuz as was mentioned, we're all just schmoes on the internet trying to get through our own realities. And we could inadvertently trigger something in you. Cuz I will raise my hand and be the first to admit I get crancky and hangry at times.

The thing you MUST do is follow their rules so you don't injure your surgery on a binge.

And having said that, congrats on the 16lbs. Having read your one week stats, I've now officially arrived at Crank Town. My stay will be indefinite. I'm 3 weeks and 2 days out. Today I'm 10.8lbs. I average 450-500 cals per day. And I've only lost 10.8lbs down since SW. LOL. Don't call me Francis or I will cut you.

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I'm in Houston so kind of near you and had the sleeve in Dec. Down 61 lbs. Feeling better. Was definitely worth it. I hope the everything is going well for you. Update us when you can!

I am back home after my bypass surgery in Tiajuana. I'm post op day 4. Everything went great! I guess I'm one of the lucky ones who have not encountered much pain at all, no nausea thus far and I'm having no problem keeping down broths and water. Thank you for your well wishes. I cant wait to keep up this journey and have a chance at better health and simply better quality of life. I know there will be bumps in the road ahead, and everything won't be peaches and cream, but at least I have a great start so far. 😍

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!
